A three-day erotica convention may have found a new home, but it's not being welcomed with open arms. In fact, Edison Mayor Jun Choi sounded remarkably like his counterpart in Secaucus, Mayor Dennis Elwell, in expressing his displeasure. We strongly object to this type of gathering in Edison. There is no place for it here, Choi said this afternoon. However, he said, were not in the same legal position as Secaucus. We dont have the legal standing to stop it.
Elwell got his wish today when organizers of the "sex-po" pulled out of Secaucus and moved the event nearly 30 miles down the Turnpike to the Raritan Center in Edison. The Middlesex County venue doesn't serve alcohol and is far removed from any educational buildings -- unlike the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, where the convention originally was scheduled to run this coming weekend. Although there isnt anything Edison can do legally, Choi said "safeguards" are being planned -- including heavy security -- to ensure there are no minors or alcohol at the event. Elwell, meanwhile, said he was "very happy" when the municipal attorney called him around 11 o'clock last night with news of the switch. I think we proved our point without even going to court," the mayor said. "If they thought they were right, they would have went to court and let the judge make a decision. Secaucus attorneys were prepared to argue that the convention violated state law prohibiting certain sexual activities in establishments with a liquor license. "I don't like people walking around Secaucus that like being whipped and burned," Elwell said during a news conference held yesterday in the playground of a nearby child center.
I never thought Secaucus was the place for it, he said. Its just not the type of thing we want to see here. In turn, adult film star Ron Jeremy called Elwell stupid and unfair, saying the mayor could have raised objections much earlier in the process. I dont think its the worse thing in the world that somebody calls me stupid, Elwell responded today. If he thinks Im stupid then maybe that talks more about his intelligence.
The event's organizers certainly weren't going to lose a marketing opportunity. They unveiled new EXXXOTICA event logos that read: "The Show Your Mayor Warned You About" and Too Hot For Secaucus. "Maybe Edison is a hotter town, Elwell remarked. In a release, Victory Tradeshows Management said organizers moved the location to the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center "rather than face a postponement or various rules set forth." Victory owner J. Handy called the new venue a bigger and better location for the convention, which is scheduled to have wet T-shirt contests, appearances by adult film stars and exhibits from manufacturers of adult toys and other materials.
According to the now-defunct Secaucus lawsuit, state law prohibits lewdness or immoral activity as well as any obscene, indecent, filthy, lewd, lascivious or disgusting recording, printing, writing, picture or other matter from any facility with a liquor license. Elwell said the real concern was that the erotic event would return every year if allowed there this time. This would not be the thing we would want to be noted for, he said Although the show is moving, the after-parties will remain at Harem Cabaret in Lodi.
Nothing to see here, move along.
2. Edison is more of a Bollywood town anyway.
Won’t JimRob be surprised when his traffic rating jumps 1000% due to the title of this thread.

They were replaced by logistics centers (ie warehouses). Nevertheless, you still smell the swamp gas from time to time.
