Barack Obama rattled as rivals steal the limelight
Times UK ^ | Sept. 10, 2008 | Tom Baldwin

Barack Obama tried to present a picture of perfect poise yesterday in the face of evidence that Sarah Palin is transforming the presidential race, insisting that he was less concerned about polls and newspaper headlines than "what I can do for the country".

With Democrats asking if the familiar sight of a Republican resurgence is a trend or merely a post-convention bounce, Mr Obama's mask of calm has, at times, slipped to reveal him as uncertain - even disorientated - about how to tackle the unexpected phenomenon of Mrs Palin.

Although he made two weighty policy speeches in Ohio about Iraq and education policy, he now spices campaign appearances with spluttered outrage at how Mrs Palin and Mr McCain are portraying themselves as agents of change - or fulmination over the failure of the media to ask them tough questions.

"This is a party that's been in charge for eight years and now they're trying to run against themselves," he told one rally. "These folks are shameless."

In an apparent break with the convention of neutrality in US elections Gordon Brown praised Mr Obama and the Democratic party for their proposals to ease the impact of the global economic downturn.

You know when all you do is call your opponents names, you're really in a very bad place. The Messiah should have seen it coming! (laughing)

Exactly what economic proposals is Mr. Browne referring to? Socialism??

I'm not sure Obama wants Gordon Brown's endorsement. He's as popular as the plague in the UK!

I'm shocked that Palin has only endured questions on why she didn't abort her baby, why she didn't abort her daughter's baby, and whether she can provide DNA evidence to prove that she is Trig's mother and now to prove that Todd is Trig's father, plus questions on why she wanted to censor books and remove them from the library before they had been published, whether she had affairs with various men, whether she is a religious freak who is unqualified to hold office, whether she cheated in the Miss Wasilla contest, and other soft questions that anyone could handle without irritation. Meanwhile, Obama has had to field questions on how he became so brilliant, whether he will start out as the best president in our history or he will need a few weeks to reach that level, and whether he needs an extra pillow or a cool drink during his interviews. He's right. The media needs to try for more evenhanded treatment of the candidates.

Poor Joe Biden. His only media questions are "Joe who?" and "are you in politics?"

Pop careers come and go, and Obama is realizing he was just a warm up for Sarah, the real star. It’s time for him to get off the stage.

He’s coming undone. Words? Just words?

Obama said, “Let’s not play games. What I was suggesting — you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you’re absolutely right that that has not come…”

“Christian faith,” Stephanopoulos interrupted, correcting Obama.

Gordon Brown, who envies the approval rating of the US Congress weighs in. Please, come across The Pond and do a few stops with The Chosen One.

"The Conservatives have raced into a record 24-point opinion poll lead among those certain to vote as Labour hit a 30-year-plus voter rating low." From this recent article: Tories register record poll lead.

"This is a party that's been in charge for eight years and now they're trying to run against themselves"

Damned straight.

Folks were fed up with the GOP leadership. Congressional approval ratings stunk.

So they voted in the Democrats, and approval ratings fell even farther.

Conclusion? We voted out the GOP because they were too corrupt, too big-government, too anti-freedom. Only to find that the Dems were worse.

What we want isn't more Democrats, it's Republicans who act less like Democrats.

The extent to which he has been overshadowed was underlined by a report from the Pew Research Centre showing Mrs Palin was a significant factor in 60 per cent of campaign stories last week and Mr McCain in 52 per cent, compared with 22 per cent for Mr Obama and only 2 per cent for his running-mate, Joe Biden.

OUCH!
