Putting the 'Lie' in 'Library' (Wall St Journal Debunks Palin book banning smear)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 09/09/08 | By JAMES TARANTO

Sarah Palin seems like a perfectly normal person, but partisans both in and out of the media have been busily trying to depict her as some sort of religious nut. Among other things, Palin's opponents claim that as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, she was a "book banner"--which is to say, that she sought to have books removed from the local public library. This claim has been debunked--but not before it has spread all over the Internet with the help of some in the mainstream media.

The book-banner tale seems to have originated in a widely circulated Aug. 31 email from Anne Kilkenn... a Wasilla resident and harsh Palin critic...but when the Anchorage Daily News investigated the story, it found no evidence that Palin had ever sought to remove books from the library.

The chairman of the Alaska Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee tells the Daily News that there is no evidence in her files of any censorship at the Wasilla library

When does the public get offered up Anne Kilkenn on tv. Like the Duke rape case.

According to a Wasilla resident who called Hannity or Levin yesterday, the town librarian is extremely anti-Palin. Seems she’s eager to discredit Sarah whenever possible.

Someone should notify former NY mayor Ed Koch. He has publicly stated that Palin is “scary” and cited this rumor, apparently believing it.

“Library science attracts a lot of lefties.”

No kidding. I worked in H.R. (arrrgh!) for a city for several years. The Library applicants were completely whacked out “free thinkers”. Fortunately, the Director was relatively sane and reasonable so was able to rein in many of them.

You got that right. The American Library Association could not bring itself to condemn Fidel Castro for destroying private libraries, open to the public, and jailing the people who created them.

Enopes debunked this swiftly too, as they did with several other anti-Palin ones.

Library science attracts a lot of homely lefties.

Why, then, would Palin's "look" be described as that of a "naughty librarian"?

You’re right about that. Our university librarian tried to tell me that this crap was all true and the proof she offered was the American Library Association piece on this supposed crime. Our librarian is an obnoxious little left-wing gnome.
