If Democrats want to understand what makes people vote Republican, they must first understand the full spectrum of American moral concerns. They should then consider whether they can use more of that spectrum themselves. The Democrats would lose their souls if they ever abandoned their commitment to social justice, but social justice is about getting fair relationships among the parts of the nation. This often divisive struggle among the parts must be balanced by a clear and oft-repeated commitment to guarding the precious coherence of the whole. America lacks the long history, small size, ethnic homogeneity, and soccer mania that holds many other nations together, so our flag, our founding fathers, our military, and our common language take on a moral importance that many liberals find hard to fathom.

The Government as your master is fair?
Like I said...the enlightenment was a failed experiment. They are just replacing one totalitarian ideology for another.
It is clearly written by a liberal atheist, but I thought it was a very strongly written article. I’d enjoy a debate with the author.

Thanks for the interesting post. I am printing out the essay and the counter-essays for leisurely digestion later on tonight. However, from what I can see after a very superficial scan of the essays, the difference between Democrats and Republicans is Republicans respect the vast majority of the citizens of this nation and the Democrats pity them. Hence Republicans want to enable people to pursue their own definition of happiness and Democrats want to define and provide that happiness (and reap the credit therefor).
like Marxist and homosexual indoctrination in our schools, abortion-on-demand, welfare moms, Christian-bashing, gun grabbing, newspeak, overtaxation without representation, Constitution destruction, judicial tyranny...
Because there’s not a Conservative Party that we can vote for.
See post #18.
The author seems to be channeling Thomas Frank and a number of other left-wing "experts" who can't understand why middle and lower middle class Americans vote for Republicans. Now even if we discard all the factors other than economics as to why they vote for Repubicans (which are many), let's just talk about the economic factor. As you said, why should these lefties believe that the Democrats have the economic answers for less-than-rich Americans?
Their thinking reflects a kind of severely limited thinking about the possibilities for success for average Americans. At the bottom is a failure to believe in America: not just the physical reality but also the idea of America where the average person can become successful or wealthy without the overreaching hand of Big Government. In short these lefties are Big Gov acolytes. Average Americans who vote Republican are limited government Americans. There's the difference.
Why do farmers keep some grain aside to grow next year instead of just eating it now? After all, it would be in their short term best interest to have some more bread this winter instead of keeping grain in the barn. Maybe because people can see that short term gain can often result in long term losses. If you vote in favor of anti-business Democrats, the businesses will produce less, hire less and even provide less profit for those who have saved a few thousand dollars into the stock market. Sure, you might not get the latest goodies that the Dems promise, but what damage will that program do and the what better things could have been done by those who had been taxed?
All I need to know about secularism I learned from the French Revolution.
It means having a tall redhead assigned to you by the Federal Girlfriend Assistance Office.
Because their is no large Christian Conservative Party.

Son, are you going to eat that? How many times have we told you NOT to play with your food!
Right you are! Democrats = Enlightened Europeans? I have a feeling that the liberals look at EU life and see Utopia, while conservatives see only foolish waste and moral decay. Americans will probably always desire freedom over serfdom, regardless of how much “safety” is offered. (Although I could be wrong.)
If we were Communists we would vote Democrat but we love freedom so we don’t.
What the hell does that mean?
... Only a Mindless Liberal could write something that stupidly meaningless.
