Obama may be suffering from the same condition Clinton had -- Inevitable-itis.
Since 2004, Hillary thought she was inevitable. She apparently wasn't.
Since Hillary ceased her 2008 campaign, Obama thought he was inevitable.
The problem with their mis-perceived inevitableness is that it made them appear haughty, and the general populace doesn't not like haughtiness.

They all sound a tad worried, too. Rush just played a montage of the Drive-Bys in unison warning viewers to "take a deep breath...polls go up, polls go down...not to worry." During Barry's presser today (to copy President Bush), he was asked about the polls and he repeated the same talking points.
