McCain Campaign Crowds Grow Exponentially
ABC News ^ | Sept. 9, 2008 | BRET HOVELL

At John McCain's rally in the town of Lee's Summit, Mo., there were more people standing outside than were able to fit inside. That kind of crowd just hadn't been seen at McCain's events before last week's Republican convention.

Saturday in Colorado Springs, about 10,000 people waved American flags at McCain's rally in an airport hangar there, and Friday in the town of Cedarburg, Wis., there were more people crowding the main street and the surrounding blocks than the population of the tiny town.

These numbers seemed unfathomable to the campaign just last month.

So what happened?

Two words: Sarah Palin.

A typical McCain event before he announced the Alaska governor as his running mate averaged only about 1,000 people. Now 5,000 has been the low end of turnout in the last few days, and the biggest event last weekend drew about 11,000.

I was lukewarm (at best) for McCain until he chose Palin.

I hope they come to South Florida soon.

Or free underwear. Hopefully, Michael Moore will get more active in the campaign, sooner rather than later.

The kooks turn off more voters than they turn on.

I still can't get over that Obama went to Germany (you know home of the NAZIs) to denounce OUR past.

I too was luke warm for McCain, but God Bless Him, I believe he and Sarah Palin are going to bring this home for us. Considering the alternative out there, he will always have my gratitude! Now the GOP, that’s a different story....

Nah, Obama was the biggest “weiner” at those rallies! :D

McCain was not the 1st choice of most of us.
But his pick of Palin, shows that he can make excellent decisions, and is looking in the right direction for the parties future.

I hope that all of this “Sa-rah, Sa-rah” cheerleading and signs for Sarah leaving McCain out doesn’t have negative affect on his ego. Ego’s play a major role in politics and playing 2nd fiddle will get old. Don’t want McCain to do anything stupid...not that he’s capable of that. ~sarc

I don’t know where he gets the number of about 11,000 at an event lask weekend as the highest figure:
Cedarburg is a town of about 11,000-——the crowds that showed up for McCain/Palin were estimated between 35,000 and 40,000. Overwhelmed all predictions.
IMO, McCain/Palin will beat all predictions in November if ACORN doesn’t flood the polls with multiple voters.

I really want the city/town/county/ voter registration clerks to purge their rolls of dead/moved/ felon/ and not eligible voters.
This is the biggest dirty secret of our voting process, IMO.

Right - no gimmicks to lure in the crowds - just the straight talk express. How is it, though, that with these large crowds, we are not up more in the polls?

Not the first choice? He wasn’t even my FIFTH choice!

Palin changes the whole equation.

Best. McCain. Decision. EVER.

(Faint praise, that)

Until 2 weeks ago I was the jaded sort that would have said that the VP choice was

- talked about by pundits out the ying yang.
- could hurt a candidate but not help them.
- that nobody voted FOR someone because of their Veep.

OK so I was wrong.

Can anyone think of a prior time in American History when a VP choice had such a positive, galvanizing effect?

Truman was a prophetic choice in 1944 (got the commie Henry Wallace off the ticket and thus dodged a major bullet in 1945) but wasn’t the reason that people voted for FDR.

They say Nixon was a key choice for Ike but I don’t know if this is the case or not.

Thoughts?
