It wasn't that long ago that the left considered this November's election a mere formality on the road to Barack Obama's coronation as president. They loved posting poll after poll showing Obama winning by huge margins. Oh, how they gloated about the massive loss John McCain was sure to suffer. Well, the polls have changed and now the latest USA Today/Gallup poll shows quite a different result:
WASHINGTON The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an "enthusiasm gap" that has dogged the GOP all year.
McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican's biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.
The convention bounce has helped not only McCain but also attitudes toward Republican congressional candidates and the GOP in general.
"The Republicans had a very successful convention and, at least initially, the selection of Sarah Palin has made a big difference," says political scientist Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia. "He's in a far better position than his people imagined he would be in at this point."
Even more significant is McCain's jump among likely voters:
In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/ 3 points for both samples.

Reading the DUmp yesterday was highly amusing.
That's what REALLY scares 'em.
Oh, the Hugh Manatee!
Hope Susan Sarandon likes pasta.
Good ol' predictable Larry.
Palin Attack! Palin Attack!
;-)
heh heh— I love the smell of smoldering Lefties!
ROCK ON!
Palin has “Legs” (PUN INTENDED!) and they are fast becoming TERRIFIED.
They knew the luster had worn off of the liberal messiah even before thier own convention, but NEVER expected that McCain would give the Repub base a reason to vote FOR him, instead of against Obama.
Wow, the left will go into full panic mode, all right.
OLBERMANN: "The man just lost seven points in the likely voter poll. McCain did from last month's USA Today's Likely Voter poll. The higher level one. The supposedly more sophisticated one. It was 49-45 McCain last month. It's 48-45 Obama. Back up what they're saying with what you're saying."
Expect the liberals and the MSM to crank up DEMOCRATIC PARTY ATTACK MACHINE to much higher levels.
now if we can only get the media to continue the mud slinging we can put a little daylight between McCain and osamaobama.
Do not get complacent. Do not get overly confident. Stay vigilant. Stay strong. And keep on pushing the McCain/Palin express!
How do they determine likely voters? I would expect that you would AT LEAST have to be registered to be in that category.
Let’s not get giddy
Election is 6 weeks away
Economy is hurting and MSM will play it for all it is worth and blame Bush tie it to McCain
And of course Bush nor McCain will point out there was a recession when Bush took over and cut taxes
I double-downed on my contributions to the McCain-Palin campaign as soon as I heard this. I suggest everyone do the same if you can. Volunteer, donate, pray. This is the time to get more agressive, not less.
Oh, can you bear the anguish? And, did you her that Susan Sarendon is leaving the country? Woe is us.

Will Code Pink be protesting at USA Today?
