Raleigh, N.C. – On the heels of a successful Republican convention Barack Obama’s lead in Michigan is down to just a single point. He has a 47-46 advantage over John McCain.

The selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate appears to be a hit with Michigan voters. 45% of respondents say they are more likely to vote for McCain because of his running mate selection, while just 30% say Joe Biden joining the Democratic ticket makes them more likely to vote for Barack Obama.

---snip----

PPP surveyed 1,147 likely voters on September 6th and 7th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-2.9%.

FYI, MI is about 14% black as a proportion of the electorate.

Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and Grand Rapids are the controlling blocks of Democraps here in Michigan due to the union influence be it white or black. As those cities go, so goes the state election.

Considering the state of our economy, hopefully the disenfranchised union workers will see the light and vote for the Republican ticket. (I'm not too optimistic tho.....)

This is excellent news. Michigan could flip.

I never understand why MI votes Dem. Especially considering all the failures in MI Dem politics.

I have been hearing whispers that cities like Detroit have been quietly preparing for post-election rioting by Obama supporters. Has anyone else heard this?

One problem with Wisconsin, along with Iowa and Minnesota.

It is in these states, with overwhelmingly white populations, that liberal guilt resides in spades. These largely German-, Swedish-, and Norwegian-Americans are leaning to Obama to expiate the nation’s racism.

Bush won by a small margin in Iowa and Wisconsin in 2004. McCain might lose them in ‘08.

But Michigan is not filled with guilty liberals, but working class union folks. Palin will pick up these voters.

I agree, but there needs to be enough of a margin to overcome the latte-lovers and tree-huggers in the Seattle metro area, along with the ballot stuffing antics that gave Christine Gregoire the gubernatorial election a few years ago.

Oh, we’re in agreement that PA is in play.

"Palin will be a hit throughout this area, specifically with rural voters, suburban Moms, and independents."

It appears that Sarah Palin has been doing especially well with men, so far, rather than with women so much. Interesting how things work out.

Good thing Obama broke his word on public funding, he’ll need more money than he can gather to defend all those blue states that McCain is threatening in. But what the hell, what’s the big deal about a man breaking his word?

"If Obama desires to dump Biden for reasons of election strategy (and not because of some malfeasance or gross disqualification on the part of Biden)- how does he force him off the ticket, if Biden doesn’t what to go? I see Biden’s arrogance and ego as his fatal flaw, to the degree that ..."

I think kicking Biden off the ticket could only occur if the states have the time to redo the ballets. So if the Democrats are going to do it, it has to be done very soon. Of course this would be an admission of a total failure of their election strategy. I don't think they would have the guts to do it, although I wouldn't put anything past them at this time.

"Obama’s lead will soon become a past figment of his imagination. His day is coming. Before that, I see him dropping his VP and trying to bring in Hillary."

I don't know if the egotistical Obama would slink over to Hillary with his tail between his legs and beg her to climb aboard his train wreck. Michelle would probably beat him to death with rolling pin before that happended. Hillary wants him to suffer --- suffer in public. However if the money is right -- who knows?

Would not the Bradley Effect be strongest with those voters?

Nope. The Bradley effect happens when the whites are union members, of English or Irish stock, or poor Southern whites.

Americans with origins from Germany or northern Europe, but living in the Midwest, and having traditional Midwestern values, do not have the arrogance of your average leftist but in a perverse way they would vote for Obama so as to punish the nation for 250 years of slavery and racism. It’s the Bradley effect, but in reverse.

Waiting for a new poll out of Wisconsin. Last Rasmussen poll showed Obama’s lead in Wisconsin went from 11 pt down to 4.

Looks like the commie is having some trouble.

Too bad California’s votes won’t count for much -— out here my Norwegian-American relatives and I, long-time Republican voters, will be voting McCain/Palin on 11/4!!!!

It’s ridiculous that some white folks think they need to support whichever “black” person comes along to show they are not racist. It’s not racist to vote for the competent person, and Obambi is clearly NOT competent.

Everybody forgets that Michigan was George Wallace’s strongest northern state. This is a weekend poll not allowing for the Bradley effect. Accounting for these would give McCain a NET plus 5% to 10%, that is a 4% to 9% lead.
