LAURA INGRAHAM SHOW - Sarah Palin sacrificing family to advance her career?
Laura Ingraham show phone call ^ | 9-8-08 | dfu

Posted on 09/08/2008 10:12:47 AM PDT by doug from upland

Laura Ingraham was discussing the comments of Sally Quinn of Washington Post fame. She is the queen of the Washington elite.

Sally, as have others, has been criticizing Sarah Palin for putting her career ahead of her family. Oh, what happened to women's lib, Sally?

I was able to get through to Laura's show, and she put me on right away. Yes, Sarah's family is going to be put second. But not to her career ----- to the country.

As soldiers and the families of soldiers do every day, Sarah and her family are going to make a substantial sacrifice for their country. Yes, it is going to be tough on them. It is tough on all of those who actually make sacrificies in the defense of this great nation. Sally Quinn and her elitist leftist pals will never understand that.

Quinn is trying to appeal to an assumed narrative that she thinks all Christian conservatives believe of woman and that indeed many do subscribe to...”Its okay for women to have careers but when they have children they need to stay home and raise them while dad does the job thingy....so Palin is not a true Christian woman but a Jezebel” It’s a cynical attempt to try to shear off some support by getting other Christian women to question her true spiritual bonafides (and indeed some will).

Yet that line of reasoning has risks to Obama as other liberal women who do balance careers and family may be very offended by such a line of attack. Quinn herself is no authority on Christian family life!

You actually give a lot more credit to Quinn than I do on this issue.

I don’t think Quinn has the mental capacity to pull that plan off.

I am no Gloria Steinem admirer, but...Gloria Steinem was a celebrity in her own right long before Zuckermann; Sally Quinn was just some cheesy reporter for the Style section (or whatever it was called back then) before she took up with the already married Ben Bradlee and broke up his marriage.

Like my wife asks...”why don’t they ever question Obama if he’s putting HIS career ahead of his family?””

Or Hillary Clinton?
Or Bill Clinton?
Or Teddy Kennedy? (My gun has killed fewer people than Ted Kennedy’s car!)
Or JFK?
Or Madeline Not-so-bright?
Or OR OR OR...

Cannot apply the definition I learned of Jezebel to this statement.
What am I missing?

I don’t think she is sacrificing her family either. Her husband is taking care of the kids so only one parent is technically working full-time. That’s more time with one parent than most kids in this country have. My husband works full-time and I stay at home (I quit after having children) but he is a wonderful Dad and I am confident that things would be just fine on the home front if we ever needed to switch roles.

I was doing business, but I think Laura has commmented how she has somewhat backed down from her original comments.

No I think she indeed is semi-consciously drawing upon stereo-types she holds concerning the beliefs of conservative Christians, noting what thinks is cognitive dissonance between belief and action on the part of the Christian Palin and calling it hypocrisy! I didn’t say it was totally conscious calculation on her part, mostly emotional first response before she had a chance to muzzle her-self and try to shade her real opinions!

I was critical of Palin when I first heard the news. I still don’t know how they are going to handle everything. My own husband came to her defense and said that she was putting her country first. He then said the dad could handle the home.

I was thinking someone like Kay Baily Hutchison would have been a good VP pick, but after seeing Palin’s acceptance speech I think Palin is the woman we need right now. KBH is certainly capable, but she would not have generated any excitement, and she is a Washington insider.

I guess the good news is that Palin will have excellent access to doctors and therapists for Trig when she is in Washington, DC.

No you missed my point. Quinn tried to apply what she thought conservatives thought about the role of woman in an attack upon Palin. She calculated that some traditional
Christian women not see Palin as a “true role model” stay at home mama and thus would not want to vote for her. I was pointing out Quinn’s own stereo-types of conservative Christian women and how she thought they might react by pointing our Palin’s “hypocrisy”!

In all fairness, her husband has worked. I don’t know what he’ll do now. So there has not been a parent at home. I don’t know how they are handling the daycare issues.

Maybe Michelle has put career above family, who knows.

I thought feminists were all about choice. Palin has made choices. It now seems the feminists don’t seem to like her choices or her too much. Funny, back in the 80’s when I chose to be a SAHM they didn’t like my choice either.

Is it our business? I mean we’re the ones who argued that it doesn’t take a village. ;)

Not beating up on you. I had this discussion at church yesterday.

"....Quinn’s own stereo-types of conservative Christian women and how she thought they might react...."

And how the men would react...

Her lies are so apparent for the whole world to see.

If you read Dr. Laura’s Books, it is ok to work part time. I think that Palin is an exception, at least she is serving a cause that could save the United States. For the typical women, it’s a different story. Palin has been called, this is not a typical situation. It happens once in awhile. I still say that women should be a little more sensitive to their babies needs. Day care is an awful thing. And most women who allow their careers to cause them to not raise their children end up not being particularly feminine. Palin is the exception, she is still very feminine.

First, I don’t think it is any of our business.

I do think there are plenty of women who screw their families and work at all cost just for their own glory. (I know more men who do this.)

I also know of dads who are the stay at home dads. My brother was one of them. He battled cancer for about 25 years, and he never was the bread winner in his family. He passed away a few years ago. His wife was the one who provided. She’s still alive, and she is VP of a company. When my husband passed away, the Boy Scout troop that he was scout master for presented the flag. The members of the baseball team he coached talked about him. They had a non-traditional family, but it worked for them.

I also try to think what values I want to instill in my daughters (and my son). I have a degree in computer science and worked for many years as a software engineer. I gave it up when my son was a baby. I’ve never regretted that decision. I want my daughters to know it is okay to stay at home.

I’ve told them that what Sarah Palin is doing is not something that I personally would choose. However, Palin seems to be the best person for the job right now.

I explained to my daughters that when some people find out they have a down syndrome baby, they don’t keep the babies. One of my daughters’ best friends has a little brother with down syndrome. My daughters are so happy that Palin kept Trig. My daughters are mesmerized by her.

We also talked about her daughter that is pregnant. They’ve asked if she is old enough to have a baby. I told them that I wanted them to go to college first, then get married, and then have a baby. I said I would prefer that, and I thought it would be easier on them if that was the case.

I also told them if they got pregnant when they were a teenager, I would recommend that they give the baby up for adoption. I told them that I think it’s best for a baby to have 2 married adults raise the baby.

I’m having to rethink a lot of my own personal positions, but that’s okay. Palin has shaken up the status quo, and I think she is being a good role model for young ladies (even if it is different from what I would do).

I should have read what I said better.

My husband did not pass away, but my brother did. He was the stay at home dad.

As I said I was not beating up on you.
You and I made decisions based on what we each thought was best for our families and our individual situations.

I have found this whole debate rather amusing to watch as the fems twist themselves inside out and upside down. Which is it? A woman should be able to work as well as be a mother or she should stay home with her children. I thought the whole thing was about choice. Isn’t that what fems have been screaming for all these years. CHOICE! Now there is a woman who has exercised her right to make choices and they have their knickers in a twist becasue they disagree with her choices solely because she is a Conservative.
