I think the last minute DWI story is what made it close.
The DWI story was Bush/Gore in 2000. The reason it was so close in 2004 is because of the Fallujah attacks on our troops, and the Abu Ghraib "torture" story that ran all summer and fall up to the election. It really looked like Iraq was a chaotic mess.

The DUI was in the 2000 election. Pres. Bush indeed wasn’t at his best in his first debate with Kerry.
