Willie Brown: Palin floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee
SF Chronicle ^ | Willie Brown

Posted on 09/06/2008 11:13:54 PM PDT by Chet 99

The Democrats are in trouble. Sarah Palin has totally changed the dynamics of this campaign.

Period.

Palin's speech to the GOP National Convention on Wednesday has set it up so that the Republicans are now on offense and Democrats are on defense. And we don't do well on defense.

Suddenly, Palin and John McCain are the mavericks and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the status quo, in a year when you don't want to be seen as defending the status quo.

From taxes to oil drilling, Democrats are now going to have to start explaining their positions.

Whenever you start having to explain things, you're on defense.

I actually went back and watched Palin's speech a second time. I didn't go to sleep until 1:30 a.m. I had to make sure I got the lines right.

Her timing was exquisite. She didn't linger with applause, but instead launched into line after line of attack, slipping the knives in with every smile and joke.

And she delivered it like she was just BS-ing on the street with the meter maid.

She didn't have to prove she was "of the people." She really is the people.

There is one thing she should have done: announced when her 17-year-old daughter and the teenage father of the girl's unborn child are getting married and invited all of us to the wedding. It should be like Sunday at church.

As for Palin herself, she is going to be very, very effective on the campaign trail, especially if McCain's people can figure out how to gently keep her from getting into confrontations with the press.

I predict “The Thrilla From Wasilla” may well have legs.

When your party’s voice of reason is someone like Willie Brown it’s time to pass around massive doses of Vicodin to make their pain (Palin) go away.
It also may be time for the Rats to ring up Al Sharpton and his Rent-A-Riot crew to plan for election night.

Obama pronounces the name of the town “Wasilly”.

I wonder sometimes about a gaffe like that. #1, the MSM didn’t say anything about Obama’s gaffe. #2, did he say that to make her town sound silly? #3, they beat up on Dan Quayle about spelling potato with an e on the end, so shouldn’t they get on Obama for his gaffes?

From taxes to oil drilling, Democrats are now going to have to start explaining their positions. Whenever you start having to explain things, you're on defense.

That sums up today's Democretin Party. It can only win A) By default if the GOP fouls up; B) With flashy charisma and empty rhetoric that hide their true socialist agenda.

I had no idea that Willie Brown had any such depth of intellectual self-honesty. No wonder he’s had such a succesful career: He’s learned to avoid deceiving himself with wishful thinking.

Good ol' Willie Brown. Possibly the slickest politician this side of Bill Clinton.

Which is probably why the DNC has not tapped him for higher office.

(Don't need two of 'em!)

Now this is a political pro. He realizes his party is facing a significant threat, and he's sounding the alarm in a rational manner.

This is not a cause for cheer. Palin is very good, but like everyone else she puts her pants (pantyhose in her case, I guess) two feet at a time, and as such has made mistakes and has liabilities.

Willy Brown is sounding the call to the other professional Dem shark hunters that a shark's in the waters, and this is a call for their best brains to go find those flaws, and go shark hunting. And Willie knows and has used every trick in the book.

This will be interesting to watch. I hope it will be entertaining, but I suspect it will be a nail-biter, too.

Willy Brown has always been reasonable. Just pay his price and we all can get along. He was never an ideologue, just a man out for himself. This wasn’t good for the State of California, but it wasn’t immediately disastrous. We all missed him come the energy crisis of 2000-2001, because the clowns were in charge.

He’s an old man now, term limited out of everything and with the sort of reputation that will never get him into higher office.

Obama pronounces the name of the town “Wasilly”.

I've been waiting for someone in their camp to use that in an ad. It's not like it's a hard name to pronounce; he's clearly doing it on purpose.

Showing disdain for small towns like that is a clean shot into Obama's smug, aristocratic mindset. Were I making ads for McCain, I'd use a clip of him saying 'Wasilly' to preface any talk of Palin's time as mayor of 'Wasilla'. He's just being snotty, which is his default setting.

I've never agreed with Willie on much of anything, but that man is one cool cat.

I grew up watching Ali fight. No question, he WAS the greatest.
He also claims to have composed the shortest poem ever written:

“Me...
Wheee!”
