Alaskans fed up as press floods area
Politico ^ | 9/6/08 | Kenneth P. Vogel

PALMER, Alaska — The liberal blogosphere was abuzz Friday with news that a friend of Sarah and Todd Palin had tried to seal his divorce records.

Surely, the Netroots speculated, that friend must be the unnamed business partner whom this week’s edition of the National Enquirer alleges — without proof so far — was romantically linked to Palin. The McCain campaign's characterization of the story as a "vicious lie" seemed to only fuel more speculation.

And then the moment of truth, as the motion to seal was denied.

The filings, housed in a district courthouse in this town about eight miles east of the Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, contained a lot of hot news — presuming, that is, you’re interested in the child-custody agreement reached by Scott Richter and his ex-wife Deborah Richter, or in the former couple's holdings, which include a recreational property that Scott owns with Sarah and Todd Palin.

That hasn’t stopped a stream of journalists and couriers from NBC, the Los Angeles Times, Court TV and other outlets (including this reporter, presently serving as Politico’s Alaska bureau) from making their way to the Palmer courthouse to photocopy, at 25 cents a page, the 75 or so pages in the Richters’ marriage dissolution file.

Hence, Scott Richter’s motion this week to seal the file, in which he wrote, “I am friends an [sic] landowners in a remote cabin property with [the Palins] and as her campaign moves forward, my phone #’s and addresses are being used thru this file to obtain unwanted contact daily. My cabin life and private life is extremely important to me and my young son, who find ourselves and our lives disrupted by such contact.”

The judge was not sympathetic, writing in a Thursday ruling “there is no legal basis for the request.”

(For the record, Richter, who valued the property he co-owns with the Palins at $12,000, did not return messages left by Politico Northwest at the phone numbers listed in the records.)

Those who couldn’t make it to the Palmer courthouse in person were out of luck for much of Friday, since the court’s website crashed from all the traffic directed to it by a link on Andrew Sullivan’s blog.

The Palin sleuthing in and around Wasilla is getting a little ridiculous, said T.C. Mitchell, an Anchorage Daily News reporter who covers Wasilla and Palmer and was waiting in the Palmer courthouse clerk’s office to make copies of the Richters’ file. He had been there earlier in the day and inspected the most pertinent parts, but wanted to make sure he didn’t miss a peripheral detail and get scooped by the suddenly ubiquitous national press.

Mitchell said the Daily News received a call from a media outlet seeking the rules of the Miss Wasilla Pageant, presumably to determine whether Palin cheated when she won it in 1984.

There’s a growing backlash in and around Wasilla to the prying of the national media into the life of their native daughter and her family.

As journalists from ABC News — and, of course, Politico — on Wednesday leafed through bound copies of the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman at the local newspaper’s Wasilla office looking for a 1996 story detailing then-Mayor Palin’s conversations with the local librarian about censorship, Frontiersman reporter Michael Rovito said he was not going to write about the pregnancy of Palin’s 17-year-old daughter Bristol.

He and another local reporter swapped notes on all the media outlets bombarding them with Palin inquiries, including some from as far as France.

Though some folks in Wasilla brag about how many media calls they’ve gotten in much the same manner that delegates to the national conventions showed off pins they collected, most folks seem to welcome the attention about as much as Scott Richter.

Stopped outside Wasilla’s post office on a blustery afternoon this week, Cynthia Shoemaker said “people in Alaska want to give the national media a mouthful” for scrutinizing Palin’s background. “She answers to God, not reporters,” Shoemaker said.

I wonder if they know how to field dress the press? ;o)

While I believe in killin' then grillin', I think you leave this vermin for the vultures and other scavengers!

This thought had crossed my mind earlier: Most Alaskans are there because they want to be removed from this sort of attention. Wonder how they’re going to put up with being more in the spotlight from now on?

Suggestion:

Let’s burn up their money. Pop to DU and start manufacturing rumors for them to spend time and money investigating.

Here’s a suggested list:

1) She owns 78 pairs of shoes, all of them dark blue.

2) Todd killed 3 competitors during a snowmobile race and didn’t stop to bury them.

3) Sarah killed a hunter during a moose hunt and it was covered up, but if a reporter were enterprising he can find the location and dig up the body.

4) Sarah and Todd captured a moose rather than killing it and tortured it for 6 weeks in a corral, inviting townspeople out to watch. The townspeople won’t talk about it, but Democrats in the state legislature have known of it for years and quotes may be available.

5) The youngest daughter, Piper, was forced to torture the moose too, and questions posed to her will reveal this.

I’m waiting for reports of the first broken noses and busted skulls from these “media” morons. Alaskans take life a lot more seriously than those buffoons from the moonbat “media” who are up there gallivanting around, unescorted, looking for that elusive “scandal.”

Or, mount them.

It would be like sport fishing.

I love the smell of liberal fear in the morning ;-)

Seriously, this will backfire on the media. Residents that get fed up will stop talking and will soon turn nasty towards them. If not in deed, then in speech.

Our National Media is out of control and still, won’t look at any of Obama’s background.

Hmmmmm..... I’m trying hard to remember when the MSM pack-swarmed known terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn (or any of Obama’s other Chicago associates) like this to provide the hungry public with everything there is to know about those scumbags.

Obama owes the launch of his political career and his “opportunities” with boards of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and the Woods Foundation at least in good part to Wm. Ayers.

Can anyone alive imagine that if Sarah Palin had a close association over 15 years with a nationally known TERRORIST that it would not be front and center in every publication in America?

There is no more obvious evidence of media bias than the fact that they are desperate to try to destroy Sarah Palin (they will fail) why they don’t even pretend to seriously scrutinize Barack Obama.

Resourceful Alaskans should start sending reporters all over the state on wild goose chases..... “well I’m sure if you head over to Nome you can find all the dirt on what Todd Palin did during his last snowmachine race.......”

“they don’t like big city liberals from the 48 trashing their native daughter and making a mockery out of their town! “

Hey, come on now....remember when they went to Chicago to dig up everything in Obama’s past? People have such a short memory.

/sarcasm

The judge was not sympathetic, writing in a Thursday ruling “there is no legal basis for the request.”

Ironic, since the #1 gripe against Palin by the left is that she opposes the "right to privacy".

Yeah, like an Obama ally conveniently unsealed his GOP opponent’s messy divorce records, just in time to effectively guarantee a win over a last minute substitute GOP candidate in 2004.

Given that and his actions when first running for Illinois senate, has he ever won a truly fair election fight ?

No, and that speaks volumes.

What on earth does this mean? That she really wasn't pretty but she tricked people into thinking she was?

It means the Miss Wasilla Pageant did not properly vet their candidate, having only met her once or twice for 20 minutes or so before the right wing forced them to choose her, instead of their first choice, Joe Lieberman.

They cannot be seriously trying to find out if she cheated during her pageant days.

And yet the same media is completely uninterested in investigating Barack Obama's past.

When obama’s telephone records are finally unsealed we shall find out who he bought that cocaine from in 1999 that Larry Sinclair says the did as they had sex.
