Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCains speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obamas 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.
NBCs coverage of Sen. McCains speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obamas speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.
ABCs showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.
For starters, look here. You might have to copy and paste the address, but it looks good.

Well, that’s going to leave a nasty mark over at Rat headquarters.
Palin set the table. She was the reason people tuned back in to watch McCain. IMO.
I’m more optimistic now than I’ve been in a while.
If this all plays out as it looks now, Obama is going to wake up the morning after Election Night thinking “what the hell just happened? And why am I holding my a$$ in my hand?”
I think you’re right. Adding Sarah Palin to the ticket has completely changed the political landscape.
The videos were very moving of Cindy, Sarah, and John.
I just ordered this shirt, with pink sleeves:

There are a bunch of other Palin shirts on this site as well. I haven’t received it yet, so I can’t vouch for the quality of these products.
This is very surprising, but encouraging news. Perhaps Palin increased overall enthusiasm for the GOP. As I recall, the Dems got higher ratings in 1996 and this foreshadowed victory. Then 4 years ago I remember reading Bush’s convention got more viewers than Kerry’s so that was a good sign. Perhaps it will be the same this time.
I read that Biden’s numbers were something like 24 million. Much, much lower than Palin’s numbers.
But he’s Joe Biden, so who in their right mind would bother to watch? :-)
Am I the only one eating crackers strolling next to the mausoleum today?
Does anybody know how many people watched Obama on O’Reilly?
Interesting. That suggests to me, since they are both on a Thursday night and only a week apart, that McCain is in the lead in this race. It also suggests to me that republicans are underpolled by the polling companies.
That’s encouraging news! I honestly didn’t expect he would get as many viewers as Obama. I figured people kind of know what they’re getting with Mac, and wouldn’t bother watching. I hope everyone stayed tuned until the end.
Ebay has tons of mcCain/Palin gear.
That might explain it. I was expecting his numbers to be way down in comparison to Obama’s.

Heres how Ive been bumping Palin/Obama threads. Sung to the tune of Oh! Susanna, dont you cry for me. .... Oh, no Bama, please dont lie to me... for Im off to Free Republic with a laptop on my knee.
I come from Minnesota with my laptop on my knee; | Im goin to Free Republic my true love for to see. | It rained all night the day I left, | the weather it was dry; | The sun so hot I froze to death, | Obama dont you lie. | | Oh! No Bama, dont you lie to me; | I come from Minnesota, with my laptop on my knee.
I had a dream the other night, | When everything was still; | I thought I saw Obama dear, | A-coming for The Hill. | The smearing lie was in Duluth, | The tear was in his eye, | Said I, Im coming for the truth | Obama dont you lie. | | Oh! No Bama, dont you lie to me; | Im off to Free Republic, | with my laptop on my knee.
I fight in my pajamas, | Its plain for all to see. | I aim to be the next Buckhead; | The media all hate me. | I fell in love with Sarah | When my sister bit a moose. | The Guvnors family ate it up | And then they set it loose. | | Oh! No Bama, dont you lie to me; | Im off to Free Republic, | with my laptop on my knee.
She loves her sons, she likes her guns, | and Triggernometry. | The media will jump the shark | When Juan makes history. | Well, JimRob knows shell pave the trolls | So controversially, | And Berg will knock Obama down | With friends of Hillary. | | Oh! No Bama, dont you lie to me; | Im off to Free Republic with a laptop on my knee.
I soon will be in Hawaii, | And then Ill look all round, | And when I find his birth record, | Ill fall upon the ground. | But if I do not find it, | This Freeperll surely die, | And when Im dead and buried, | Obama dont you lie. | | Oh! No Bama, dont you cry for me; | Im off to Free Republic with a laptop on my knee.

This is why the Dems are in full-panic mode.
