McCain TV Ratings Beat Obama in Preliminary Numbers
TVWeek ^ | 9/5/08 | Andrew Krukowski

Posted on 09/05/2008 8:16:50 AM PDT by B Knotts

Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.

NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.

ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

I think Palin got people interested in this ticket. She really was a shot in the arm. McCain has been around...forever. Biden has been around.....forever.
If feels like Obama has been around forever, and is over exposed. Sarah is fresh and people will not be tired of her in just 60 days.

“At LEAST PEOPLE are Watching!”

Which means they’re listening.

And if they listen, they will hear the message.

And that is very bad news for Obama.

The majority has finally came out from under the rock and seems to be tired of Bama and ready to hear something else. Im cautiously optimistic that this Obama phenomenon is getting old and tired.

I was wondering if the game was going to be a strong lead-in for the speech. Thanks, Giants, for doing everything in your power to not blow out the hopelessly inept Redskins, despite the number of chances you got, especially in the first half.

The so-called ‘excitement gap’ seems to have disappeared

As has been said many times: Obama's support is a mile wide and a inch deep. I think this shows that statement to be true. Looks like the big MO has changed sides.

The novelty of Obama’s celeb status has worn off. That’s all he had, now he’s got nothing. Sarah Palin is the new hot celebrity as politics go, and she’s got all the celebrity appeal of Obama, plus 10 times the substance.

John McCain does not have the glitz, but he’s got some fire. His speech last night was rather typical political stuff, but I really liked the ending.

Going last, bigger audience, better message, new celebrity status...there are some positives for McCain/Palin.

I was wondering about that NFL game—glad it must have ended just as the speech started? Good timing then. Maybe people were still sitting around and started flipping channels and ended up watching McCain.

It wasn't coincidence. I'm sure the folks in Minnesota were keeping a close eye on the game, and pacing the night's activities accordingly.

I believe these assets were earned by Cindy McCain!

If you didn’t see the way the Ma and Pa McCain earned their fortune in the world’s most capitalistic Country in the world, then I suggest you start researching the family’s history.

I agree.

Too many people think we have it in the bag.

Complacency is dangerous.

and is aiming at 1660 Pennsylvania Avenue

1660 is the guard house on the NW corner. You're thinking of 1600.

On second thought, with McCain as President, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue could be rightfully considered the Guard House.

;-)

There, my friends, is the spread come November.

McCain just might win this thing BIG, mostly thanks to Palin.
