An American Margaret Thatcher? [MICHAEL BARONE]
Forbes ^ | 09/05/08 | Michael Barone

Posted on 09/04/2008 7:14:47 PM PDT by BunnySlippers

Never before, at least in my memory, has a vice presidential nominee so wowed a convention, and never before has a vice presidential nominee been so pivotal to a presidential candidate's campaign. John McCain made a high stakes bet and has collected big time. Since Palin's selection was announced Aug. 29 in Dayton, mainstream media has been trying to discredit Palin--even setting a betting line on when she would be dropped from the ticket. Those bets now seem to be worth less than shares of Bear Stearns.

---

The American Margaret Thatcher? Too soon to say. But consider this: Lady Thatcher in her memoirs notes that she ordered a carry-in dinner on her first day at Number 10 Downing Street and that she never did so again. Sarah Palin said she dismissed the chef at the governor's mansion. These women can do everything men can do, and put a meal on the table, too.

Please, at this point she’s no Margaret Thatcher. Even suggesting so is way over the top.

Hey, don’t ruin our hopeful optimism. Since Reagan, conservatives have had the disappointment of GWB as our high-point (despite getting the GOP all 3 Houses for 6 years). This is the closest we’ve gotten to a smaller-government leader in 20 years!

Earlier today there was a thread claiming she’s the next Reagan. The sudden adulation and hero worship is pretty disturbing.

Michael Reagan started that himself by comparing Gov. Palin to Pres. Reagan. Michael Reagan's Op-Ed on Sarah Palin: "Welcome Back Dad"

No it isn't. Thatcher got her start with no more than Palin has. Both see the end game and head directly for it with no sidetracks. Both are articulate and persuasive.

Palin is actually more appealing to Am. audiences because of feminimity and charm, while still being loaded for bear.

Good article. But, did you read the comments? Some illiterate posted a really vile one. His “lack of learning was showing” as my grandmother used to say.

Sort of reminds me of somebody else. Now who was that? Oh yeah, I think his last name is Obama.

Palin also has plenty of flaws. Yes, I realize some are just Dem talking points, but others are out there in black and white. She’s got a long, long way to go to be a Thatcher.

I don’t think SP will be, in 20 yrs, referred to as “Reagan in a skirt” or as “the American Margaret Thatcher”.

I believe she’ll be referred to as THE “Sarah Palin”.

I apologize. She’s a Thatcher, Reagan and anybody else you want to throw in there all rolled into one. I worship at her feet. She’s completely flawless.
