If the Republicans win the presidential election in November, it may well be said that they won it last night -- the night that John McCain's brilliantly screwy choice for a running mate changed from laughingstock to national star.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's acceptance speech wasn't brilliant rhetoric, and she's not entirely accomplished as a public speaker, but she put herself over with slick, self-assured skill. To those in the hall and probably to millions watching at home, she came across as genuine and down-to-earth, a self-described "hockey mom" whose confidence and bravado were not exactly ingratiating but were somehow persuasive.
She even told a pretty good joke, with a slight hint of self-mockery: "The difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."
"I think people will like her," said Chris Matthews on MSNBC, a fairly safe understatement. The crowd went wild for the speech, especially its nastier and more combative passages.
Palin is certainly no shy Little Miss Buttercup. In her more hostile moments, she went on the attack against Barack Obama, usually referred to as "our opponent," vice presidential nominee Joe Biden and all living Democrats with malicious zeal. Her use of sarcasm was, it must be admitted, crudely effective, as when she scoffed that "the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of personal discovery," a mocking reference to the loftier oratory in which Obama specializes.
Commentators on more than one channel said the crowd in St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center wanted "red meat," and from last night's speakers, obviously including Palin, they got it -- blood red. Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who preceded Palin, in fact delivered a boorish attack full of cheap shots. Seemingly, Giuliani is intent on systematically destroying, with each public appearance, the goodwill he had

The Washington Compost, what a piece of cr@p newspaper.
Shales has his head so far up Obama’s butt he has to look out of Barack’s navel to see where he is going...
Governor Palin had so many great lines in that speak. Every time she delivered one we would “that’s the best line yet”, then she would deliver another and we would say it again.
“”I think people will like her,” said Chris Matthews on MSNBC”
He was thinking, “Not me, of course, but those hayseeds on the right who like guns and God.”
Shales must have been smoking dope with BO during the whole Reagan administration if he believes this drivel.
Amazing that when this campaign started, conservatives had little consolation in the primaries, and, somehow, the campaign is transformed, almost in the twinkling of an eye. Will it be the first campaign to turn on a VP pick. Could this VP have more political capital than any other VP ever did? And all this after the most vicious MSM smear job since Clarence Thomas?
Exactly. The press hated Reagan’s guts, which is why they seemed out of joint that so many people wanted to pay him last respects as he lay in state.
Governor Sarah Palin rules!!! She CHANGED American politics FOREVER last night. She showed the liberal white boys at the DNC just what a bunch of hypocrites they really are.

Sorry for the double post. I don’t have a clue what is going on with the connection.
He must have been watching a kinder, gentler Democrat convention than the one I saw. What a load of corral dust.
(And a poorly made film about Ronald Reagan, shown to the delegates on Tuesday night, included the outright lie that “the media hated” Reagan, when just the opposite is closer to the truth.)
I was there. You could get away with that lie if people were not there. Reagan’s skill is always recounted as “he talked over the Washington media, and connected directly with the American people.” This attempt at rewriting history, i.e. “lie”, is yet more evidence that the media knows they got it wrong on Reagan, and are not happy to be called on it. They are now trying to retrieve their deeply sullied reputation after the horrible way they treated Palin. I hope the Republicans keep calling them on it, keep the spotlight shining on their misdeed, and make them pay a price for their bias. The price is their reputation, the only thing that can make them effective.
This is the theme song for Harry Reid and the men at the MSM whenever they must comment on Sarah:
You uppity women I dont understand
Why you gotta go and try to act like a man,
But before you make your weekly visit to the shrink
Youd better occupy the kitchen, liberate the sink.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
Thats what I to my baby said,
Womens liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.
Early every morning youre out on the street
Passing out pamphlets to everyone you meet.
You gave up your Maiden Form for Lent
And now the front of your dress has an air scoop vent.
Every single brakeman thats ever come along
Had a little woman always tellin him that hes wrong.
Eve said to Adam, Heres an apple you horse
And Delilah defoliated Samsons moss.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
Thats what I to my baby said,
Womens liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.
Mean-hearted harpies are breaking all the laws
Tearing up their girdles and a-burning up their bras,
Now the air is dirty and the sex is clean
And your coffee makes my hair turn green.
So damn emancipated in your mind and your body,
Gonna have to cancel all your lessons in karate.
If you cant love a male chauvinist
Youd better cross me off your shopping list.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
Thats what I to my baby said,
Womens liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.

Ah c’mon Tom just admit that Rudy and Sarah kicked the sh*t outa your boy last night.
MOMMY! SARAH'S PICKING ON ME!
What a malicious editorial. Boorish.
Freepers: Give this scam artist, Thomas W. Shales, a piece of your mind:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/staff/email/tom+shales/
Here’s mine:
Your editorial is pure sour grapes from the losing side of the aisle.
You strange biases are self-apparent:
1. Palin’s “slick, self-assured skill??”
Obama is slick incarnate. Bill Clinton is too, but Palin? You’re delusional on this.
2. “Her use of sarcasm was, it must be admitted, crudely effective...”
“Crudely” effective? No - it was superb subtle humor. Classy. How can you spin that as crude. What she said was true. Does the truth hurt? After all the Left has done trying to smear Palin & her family, she’s got every right to strike back with classy humor. Again, were you watching the same show I was?
3. Rudy Giuliani, who preceded Palin, in fact delivered a boorish attack full of cheap shots.
“Boorish????” Boorish is when a speaker makes low-class remarks or untruths to smear someone. Was Rudy citing Obambi’s 130 “present” votes a smear? No! Why don’t you sift thru his speech and find examples of low-class remarks. It was all light humor and entirely appropriate satier. Rudy’s speech was a class act. One of his best.
I look forward to your erudite response, but I expect I won’t hear from you. You’re too busy icing your bruised ego. LOL!
Meant to say “Satire”...
She shoots!
SHE SCOOOOOORES!!!
I thought Rudy did a wonderful job. And I wonder if the author would care to put Giuliani’s 9/11 references up against Kerry’s Vietnam references?
