WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A retired professor of electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee was convicted on Wednesday of violating U.S. arms export controls and passing sensitive data to a Chinese national, the U.S. Justice Department said.

I am by no means excusing this, but you would be surprised how easy it is to have a deemed export issue under the law. Many companies are unknowingly violating our export control laws but would be seen to be “knowingly” doing so since they are employing foreign nationals from restricted countries.
I am happy to see that the government is really cracking down on this, but be careful about seeking to string up this dude. It may be that he knowingly employed a Chinese assistant but was completely ignorant of the license requirement. Of course that is no excuse, but I think this may fall well short of the Rosenbergs.
