I never knew McCain was in the Forrestal fire untill I heard Fred Thompson, tell the story just now during his speech. he said McCain was in one of the aircraft on deck hit by the stray rocket.

I thought I saw on the History channel that it was McCain’s own aircraft that misfired. It’s been a while back, I don’t remember the details.

If you watch the Documentary it shows McCain climbing out of his A 4 while its starting to burn and he runs down the nose on to the boom to get away.

I just remember the story being different. Also I thought the casualties were nearly 200. This is just what I remember from several years back. Obviously this YouTube video says differently.

Scary stuff indeed. I had the honor of meeting the kid who shot that video (film, actually). Guy had balls. Kept the camera rolling while all hell was breaking loose. The film became part of “Learn or Burn,” a damage control training film.

Yep, McCain was in one of the planes and getting ready to launch and was caught up in the fire and managed to escape the burning plane.

I have watched “Trial by Fire” at least 5 times. The cause of the first missile to drop and fire, hitting loaded planes across the flight deck still isn’t known. It may have been an inadvertent touch of the button by and ordnance man or a malfunctioning circuit, but no one knows.
