According to the rodents, Sarah Palin isn't from the continental 48 states. Last I checked, Alaska was part of the North American continent. In fact Alaska is so big that if it weren't attached to North America, it would be a continent. Only Hawaii isn't part of the continental United States. The 48 states to which they refer are the contiguous states.
