This week the Republicans gather for their convention. For four days, they will labor under the illusion their party is still relevant. It's not.
It is entirely fitting that the headliner for this masquerade is a feeble looking 72-year-old white guy who doesn't know how many homes he owns.
It's more than symbolic that when a million Americans are losing their homes to foreclosure, the Republican candidate for president has lost track of his holdings.
McCain surrounds himself with people like former Republican Sen. Phil Gramm who called America a "nation of whiners" and said we are only suffering a "mental recession."
That's the same problem the Republican Party has. It has lost track of what it used to stand for: small government, a disciplined fiscal policy, integrity.
In a way, the perfect storm of a rapidly changing population -- old white people aren't going to be in the majority very much longer (and isn't that who most of the Republicans are?) -- has combined with the total abdication of principles, Republican or otherwise, of arguably the worst president in the nation's history to mark the beginning of the end of the Republican Party as we know it.
Republican Congressman Tom Davis of Virginia said it best: "The Republican brand is in the trash can. If we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."
It is so bad that more than 10 percent of the Republican members of the United States Senate aren't even bothering to attend their own party's convention. They recognize dog food when they see it.
And it almost doesn't matter who the next president is. We are witnessing the beginnings of a sea change in this country.
A wakeup call has sounded for young people who are suddenly interested enough in politics to

Cafferty is the resident CNN drunk.
Sue Simmons
Yes, he was at WNBC and his co-anchor was, I believe, Sue Simmons. I also remember one evening Liz Smith, the gossip columnist, who, after giving her nightly report, went on to plead with an anchor person who was "heavily into cocaine" and who "needs help" Said Liz, "you know who you are". We all assumed it was Cafferty - he had a bizarre, wild look about him, even then, and an unmistakable nasal quality to his voice.
What? He has no style.
They’re really looking to mobilize the Republican base, aren’t they?
A parody of themselves. What else is there to say about the MSM? To quote Jack, “they act as if they are still relevant, they are not.”
I wish someone would sue the news organizations (NY Times, CNN, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, ABC) and get a judge to rule that they had to register as 527s.
Diddy to John McCain: There Arent Even Any Black People in Alaska!
Yeah, just more of the heart and soul of America on display there, Jack.
SNORT.
Cafferty always looks like he’s holding back a giant belch. Like at any moment he’s gonna let out a loud, “Barrrrrrrack!!!!!”.
He worked for channel 4 WNBC for many years opposite Sue Simmons. Looking back, I had no idea he was “undecover” crazy during that time. Sue has had her own temperment issues as well.
There are some days - like today - that I think it would be nice for some damn fool to light that particular candle just to finally get on with it. The sooner it starts, the sooner it ends.
It's happened before and it will happen again. God help us all.
I have to be honest, things look awfully bad for the GOP at the moment, but anyone who would call the bets off on either party is delusional.
Just look at history. Remember Watergate? If the GOP is dogfood now it was radiactive in ‘76 after Nixon left. Then we saw the liberal sharks circling the pool decrying a new democratic age. Who then would’ve thought that 4 years later we would’ve had a conservative revolution that would last a generation.
Cafferty, EJ Dionne, Arianna Huffington think they are part of the new pulse of America. But America is a land of ideas and conservative ideas have always risen to the top on their own merits. Just look at the disasters brought upon the states ruled lock and fist by the democrats over the last decade—California and Michigan come readily to mind.
Americans basically want one thing, to be left alone to live their lives. The GOP lost power because they started acting like democrats. Even if Nobama wins this election, that will only create a greater backlash for a conservative GOP takeover in 2010 and 2012.
The left puts out such unadulterated vicious attacks such as this on CNN, and to think, they are the same people pushing the fairness doctrine.
They get a pass bashing conservatives on the MSM, while trying to shut down free speech on talk radio, go figure.
I believe RICK SANCHEZ also did the same thing in South Florida. He work WSVN CH #7 in Miami.
Cafferty is another hateful liberal POS who needs to be shown the door.
Yes, Sue Simmons.
Cafferty seems to get a lot of attention these days, but does he really deserve any of it? Wasn’t he a former New York news reader who ran afoul of the law in a confused hit and run auto accident? While I can only assume the police verified his driving credentials, who has verified his educational credentials? Is he an educated man? Or is he one of the many pretenders? When he talks about family issues, does he tell us about his own family issues, his own family background? Those might be interesting to know about.
