McCain needed to do two things. One was to shore up the base, so he looked for a Conservative. Two was to bring in a young outsider, a reformer with executive experience. Why not choose the most popular governor in the land? The fact that she is a female, and might pull in some disgruntled Hillary voters, is a pure bonus. I don’t think there was a male candidate with those qualifications available.
