Evangelicals rally behind Palin after pregnancy news
CNN ^ | September 1, 2008 | Rebecca Sinderbrand

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.

"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."

Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools, which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.

But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc.

"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."

Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.

"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

yes in the spears case, their mom definitely pushed them, especially britney, to be really slutty for fame and glory.

You are so right. I find that part of FRiends here so irratating. I can’t understand how they can say something is ok for one 17 year old but not another. I guess Jamie Spears did not fit the political requirements on here.

The liberal, democrat, journalist view of Christians is that Christians are bigoted, unforgiving moralists. That is because liberals, democrats, and journalists are bigoted, unforgiving moralists about their own beliefs. The concept of a loving forgiving Christian is foreign to them, to their detriment.

My Grandmother conceived my Mother outside the bounds of marriage in 1932. She and my Grandfather married and were together until his death in 1996. They were the light of our lives, the best of the best and no one could deny the goodness of these two people. I suspect that they have a very special place in Heaven - for surely a loving Lord saw all of their wonderful works of kindness, mercy and goodness performed in their life together. God Bless them.....

I agree. My gandmother was born outside of marriage as well, but my concern here is, for example, if Millie Cyrus were to become pregnant this forum would explode with mean cruel statements about her...however because we have a Republican who did it, it seems ok. That is all. I have no reason to diss this young lady...I am more interested in dissing our FRiends who have two set of rules.

I promise that I agree with you post as long as you would do that for Chelsea Clinton as well if she got pregnant at 17. I just have a sneaking suspicion that your post would not be that kind for her.

It was the gubmint mandated SEX EDUCATION in the high school where she attended that taught her “sex” outside of marriage was normal and fun. Screw the dnc media arm known as the Lame Stream Media!

Actually I thought she was homeschooled along with the other children.

I agree with you. You hit the nail on the head. Can you imagine how Chelsea would have been treated if she got pregnant? This double standard is sickening.

Some actually dismiss this as an "accident."

Very good post. I am very greatful that she did not have an abortion. I am actually happy for the family to have another member. I do remember the situation with Jamie Lynn Spears and it was extremely UGLY around here. I was appauled by it which is why I remember...some FRiends of ours called her baby a “bastard”. No mention of that word on these posts this time around THANKFULLY.

Coming out of FReeper retirement for this one because I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

In Alaska in winter, it's cold and dark and as a result babies happen. If you ever listen to hockey players talk, this is a regular occurrence. And it's been happening for tens of thousands of years in every family in every civilization.

I'm not condoning anything other than living with the consequences of choices. The poor girl is probably embarrassed as it is. In giving her child life, she's following her mother's example. Good for her.

First, I'm not much on picking on Chelsea when she was a kid.

Actually I would be impressed if Chelsea gave birth to a child at 17 prior to marriage and the father followed through and married her. The getting pregnant out of wedlock part would not impress me. It doesn't impress me regarding Palin either.

I believe Clinton family values would have aborted the pregnancy and we'd never know anything about it. For all we know it could have already happened (not speculating that it did). Bearing the consequences of bad choices isn't much in the Clinton family credo. Making the problem go away doesn't take much courage.

As I said earlier, what you do about the consequences of making a bad choice (aka making a mistake) is where character stands or falls.

Doesn’t matter - the rules re: pre-marital sex don’t matter when the people involved are from the Right. /sarc

Would we see the same reactions if it were Biden’s daughter who was involved in an immoral relationship?

God has a plan for Sarah Palin and her family. There is a chance that a Downs Baby and an unwed mother’s baby will be in the WH rather than 2 dumpsters. For that we should be praising God and praying for the families.

Pray for W, Palin and Our Troops

It is a reminder that all of us are sinners, just forgiven. At least Gov. Palin’s daugther made a couragous decision to have the baby and not having an abortion.

We are...my point has nothing to do with the thanks and pride I have for her not having an abortion.

The Libs don't understand that despite the ages of mothers and father there is a support for the life and family without any thoughts of ending that life and family.
There are families waiting to adopt for those mothers who don't want to care or can't care for a child.

Don't see anyone lauding Bristol for acting irresponsibly; only for making the right decision in the aftermath.

Ire for Jamie Spears was greater because she had a kids' show, and thus had role model status.
