Guns and Gustav We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.
I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now, he said. Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.

Right on Baby. Every house should have at least one AR15 and a case of ammo!
I hope you’re right. That gun grab after Katrina was Third Reich stuff.
Oh, I have no doubt they’ll try it; I just don’t think they’ll be as successful this time.
Plywood at a sporting goods store? Sounds like a fish story to me.
Funds are a problem.
One would certainly hope so...

I suspect that they think along the same lines you do, and therefore, will not. Which is really what the 2d Amendment is all about. Keeping them middling honest...

The German 800mm gun from WWII named "Gustav."
Off topic, I know, but it had to be done. Let's hope the current storm is much less overwhelming.
ARs at a sporting goods store smells like BS, too. Savage .270s, sure, but not AR-15s.
Down here in the south, you’d be surprised at what’s on the racks behind the counters in Sporting Goods stores. I saw an AR15 on the rack in an Academy Sports store.
When I lived in VT I saw AK-74s on the wall of the hardware store.
Sheeeesh! Where are you from? Of course AR-15s at "Sporting Goods Stores". Cabela's, Academy, Dick's Sporting Goods, virtually ALL "sporting goods" stores.
AR-15 ARE sporting goods!
***ARs at a sporting goods store smells like BS, too. Savage .270s, sure, but not AR-15s. ****
I’ve never seen a Sporting Goods in this area store that didn’t have several AR-15s or AKs for sale. Even Wal-Mart had some years ago.
Sheoot, Even Roses, A “All goods store” with everything from baby clothes to refrigerators carries AR and AK’s.
As well as “Surplus Rifles” and Ammo.
But what if you don't like AR-15s and their wimpy .223 round? Are other riles allowed?
(just kidding. your point is made)
No, not really.
One it depends on location.
Two, back in 'the old days' Kline Sporting Goods' in Chicago had AR-15's on the wall along with every other Rifle they sold. (Guns in Basement, Ski Equip on 2nd Floor)
Kline's is where Oswald bought his Mannlicher, and it was also before old man Daley went anti-gun nuts after RFK got whacked and closed all gun stores and outlawed sales in Chicago.
Far more utilitarian choice IMO would be a humble 12 gauge pump shotgun. Cheap, effective, and less "oops-factor" (in terms of bullets flying in random LONG trajectories).
Also far more intimidating to bad guys, easier to handle, etc., etc., etc.
Not as glamorous, but more practical (esp. for short range "combat" of the type apt to be encountered in a chaotic "urban breakdown" situation).
