CNN Poll: Obama 49, McCain 48
CNN ^ | 8/31/2008 | Paul Steinhauser

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) — On the eve of the Republican convention, a new national poll suggests the race for the White House remains dead even.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night shows the Obama-Biden ticket leading the McCain-Palin ticket by one point, 49 percent to 48 percent, a statistical dead heat.

The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after both the conclusion of the Democratic convention and McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

A previous CNN poll, taken just one week earlier, suggested the race between Sens. McCain, R-Arizona, and Obama, D-Illinois, was tied at 47 percent each.

“The convention — and particularly Obama's speech — seems to be well-received. And the selection of Sarah Palin as the GOP running mate, also seems to be well-received. So why is the race still a virtual tie? Probably because the two events created equal and opposite bounces — assuming that either one created a bounce at all,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Barack Obama’s acceptance speech in front of a crowd of more than 80,000 people at INVESCO Field in Denver on Thursday night wrapped up the Democrats’ convention. It was one of the most widely watched political conventions in history.

The poll suggests that the convention made people who watched more likely to vote for the Democratic ticket. Fifty-one percent of registered voters said the convention made them more likely to support Obama; only 32 percent said they were less likely to back the Democratic nominee.

Less than 12 hours after Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination, McCain introduced Palin as running mate, surprising the political world.

I don’t believe this poll for a second...doesn’t make any sense at all.

Conservatives/Evangelicals weren’t included in last weeks numbers....Dr, Dobson gave the nod and these blocks will go to McCain/Palin.

These CNN numbers don’t reflect these, ahem, rather large blocks of voters.

The deception begins...I’m not buying.

Paglia on Palin [Lisa Schiffren]

Camille Paglia is an unorthodox feminist. She is capable of disliking and liking women based on who knows what set of principles. But she didn’t like Hillary and here is what she had to say to the Times of London after watching Sarah Palin’s debut:

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling,” said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. “That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.”

Hey, you go girl!

It think the Roman temple gig at the Fiasco at Invesco is going to turn out to be Obama’s “Et tu Brutus” moment.

Dr, Dobson gave the nod and these blocks will go to McCain/Palin.

When an evangelical leader give a nod - especially lately - it's as likely that he's being shaken that hard by his less famous brothers and sisters.

In this case, I think everybody paying attention was nodding at the same time!

I expect the deception to continue right up to election day. Which is why the shock of the Obama-ites will be so delicious to watch—they are expecting him to win 55%+ to McCain’s 45%-, and it will likely be exactly the opposite.
“WHAT HAPPENED???!!! “ will be heard throughout the land.

That's odd.

I was told by several people, straightfacedly, that the Nuremberg Rally - ahem, Obama acceptance speech - was an event that people would remember all thir lives. That it occupied the same historical space as Lincoln's Cooper Union Speech or Bryan's Cross Of Gold.

So why is Obama not up by 20 points?

“...only 32 percent said they were less likely to back the Democratic nominee.”

You mean 32% of those who were rooting for Obama is not going to back him now?

I'm not one of those unfortunate ones who use the phrase, "nod my head 'no.'"     ;->

Trust me, Dr. Dobson didn't have to give any nods on this. It's a stampede to the polls now, thanks to Sarahcuda. I'm telling you, I've never seen this intensity of energy amongst Evangelicals.

The last I looked, we don’t elect Presidents on popular vote count as a nation. We vote via the electoral college on a state-by-state basis. Any poll done any other way isn’t worth a thimbleful of warm spit.

Some CNN regular(Bill Schnider?) was talking about padding the poll results to account for younger folks who have cell phones
