McCain Camp Denies that Sarah Palin was a Member of the Buchanan Brigades in the 1990s
Political Punch ^ | 30 Aug 2008 | Jake Tapper

A meme is developing out there among liberals that Gov. Sarah Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan in the 1990s, a charge that the McCain-Palin campaign strongly denies.

The evidence is the following, as first noticed by "The Nation": in an Associated Press story from July 17, 1999, titled, "Buchanan takes conservative message to Fairbanks."

"Pat Buchanan brought his conservative message of a smaller government and an America First foreign policy to Fairbanks and Wasilla on Friday as he continued a campaign swing through Alaska….In Wasilla, Buchanan took some shots at the "Republican establishment," saying it was willing to cast aside conservative ideals in a zeal to ensure the nomination for Bush.  'I'm hoping the people of Alaska will disagree that we need a candidate anointed by Washington, D.C.,' he said to a group of three dozen supporters. Among those sporting Buchanan buttons were Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin and state Sen. Jerry Ward, R-Anchorage."

Palin wrote to the AP that her presence at the rally and her wearing a Buchanan button were merely ways to welcome Buchanan to Wasilla, not endorsements of his candidacy.

But that's not quite how Buchanan remembers it.

Buchanan told Chris Matthews yesterday that Palin "was a brigader in 1996 as was her husband, Chris, they were at a fundraiser for me, she's a terrific gal, she's a rebel reformer."

Good grief. I voted for Pat in 1996. The alternative was Dole. That sure turned out great.

Previous discussion here - http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2070958/posts

From one of the posts - “She (Palin) promptly responded to the story in a letter to the editor, that “the article may have left your readers with the perception that I am endorsing this candidate, as opposed to welcoming his visit to Wasilla. As mayor, I will welcome all the candidates in Wasilla.”

“AP reported Palin was “an official of Steve Forbes’ campaign that cycle.”

“...
it doesn’t appear Palin donated to Buchanan’s campaigns.”

“Pat Buchanan has become the new David Duke to the Left. This is the most serious charge I’ve seen on Palin. I would believe her before I believe Buchanan though.”

Really? the Left loved Buchanan, and MSDNC used him beautifully, because he like them never missed an opportunity to bitch about the war in Iraq. For the longest time it was as if Buchanan forgot about social issues.

The McCain campaign says that instead of supporting Buchanan — or even McCain — in 2000, Palin actually supported Steve Forbes.

And indeed, another AP story from August 7, 1999 — one month after the Buchanan trip to Wasilla — states that joining state sen. Mike Miller of Fairbanks on the Forbes campaign’s Alaska “leadership committee will be Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin, and former state GOP chairman Pete Hallgren, who will serve as co-chairs.”

I thought it was pretty common knowledge she was.

And they're focusing on THIS but passing on Obama's ties with Ayers??? Not surprised.

Jake Tapper buried the proof that Palin was actually supporting Forbes in the 2000 election . . puts it at the very end, after printing nasty allegations against her.

There is no evidence that Palin ever gave a nickel to Buchanan . .

She claimed that Jews were going to blow up the World Trade Center one of these days?

The only real issue is this alleged business of "Sarah and her husband came to my fundraiser in 1996, yeah, that's the ticket" that this despicable clown Pat is telling people.

The Palins deny that they ever went to this fundraiser, and I will believe them over the bloviating Pat. Fundraising for national elections is heavily regulated, and if there were any truth to this story then it would be easy enough to back up with actual records.

I call BS on Pat's story.

Pat Buchanan has become the new David Duke to the Left.

And to lots of posters here. I try to just read his columns ones by one and see what he says.

Exactly: so what if she was?

Also, it’s very important to remember that Buchanan in the early 1990’s had not yet expressed some of the more troublesome views he came up with in the new century.

It was a different ballgame back then.

Please, dear God, don’t let Sarah and the McCain camp misplay this. Sarah Palin and her husband had a right to support whomever they wanted in 1996 — and if they liked Pat they should say so, loud and proud. Pat may at times be a bit of an oddball, but he’s not a raving racist like Barack Obama. Note to Sarah: Say, yeah, I like Pat. So what? Next question.

Psssst!!!!! SARAH!!!! over here!!! Good advice!! We are ALL BEHIND YOU, HEAR??? Keep TRUCKING! McCain~ Palin

Thanks for highlighting that, airborne. That ends the story from Palin’s side. Pat, on the other hand, appears to have exaggerated, fibbed or flat out misunderstood.

No...just a raving anti-Semite and Hitler apologist. The Dems are pushing this line of attack to draw Jewish voters away from the McCain-Palin ticket.

Pat was a decent guy at one time, but he desperately wanted to be President.

Now this is just my opinion, but I think that once Dole won in 1996 (or rather the GOP gave it to Dole to lose), and Pat realized that any dream he had of being President was over, Buchanan began to become angry and bitter over the loss.

His personality, IMHO, has changed since 1996, when he ran against Dole. The GOP nominated Dole as a “gimme” to the Dems. They didn't even try to beat Clinton.I can see how that might have p!$$ed Pat off.

LOL...this is too funny.

I dislike Pat Buchanan, I think he has jumped the shark and is out of touch, but he isn’t disreputable. Just dead wrong in many ways (in my opinion)

It isn’t like his name is Saul Alinsky, Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers or Bernadette Dohrn.

This is the Liberal Left. Like Alex Baldwin in “Team America” sputtering “But...but...Global Warming...Corporate Greed...” the libs are spitting and sputtering in the same way.

It warms the cockles of my heart. They have absolutely no way to fight her, and they know it. This was GREAT! To announce her the day after the Obamessiah Coronation! Took the wind right out of their sails, it did!

There is a long way to go and a lot of hard fighting ahead, but this is a lot more hopeful than I expected it to be at this point. She is no messiah, and she is no Reagan, but politically she provides some glue to the party to help keep some of the real conservatives from peeling off because she IS a real conservative in the Phyllis Schalafly mold, and brings in a lot of women who will vote for her because, well...she is a woman. There are quite a few of them out there.
