Amid the vast volume of anti-Palin e-mails flying around at the moment, the one asserting that she once pled guilty to criminal negligence sort of sticks out, and seemed worth poking around.
Alaska state records show that she was charged in June of 1993, and pled no contest, to the serious-sounding charge.
Turns out that it's less a major felony, more an only-in-Alaska moment, and that like so many of these things it's surfaced in Palin's earlier races, notably in 2002.
The details of the weighty charge: Using a drift gillnet to harvest salmon from the Bristol Bay area without an annual permit.
Here's from the 2002 Anchorage Daily News:

Palin explained the fishing violation by saying that she had been a crew member but took over the permit for that season from her sister-in-law. Palin then forgot to switch her registration from that of a crew member to a permit holder, she said.
Palin called the court in Dillingham and straightened out the mistaken felony designation. The court clerk described it as a data input error and faxed Palin a letter of apology, saying the error has been corrected.
But in recent days reporters have anonymously received copies of the court record calling it a felony. I think its pretty cowardly, Palin said. Somebody is peddling this five days before the election, obviously to smear my reputation.
Say it ain't so Sarah!
Well, Sarah better get off the ticket then shouldn’t she? (sarcasm) this is very serious charge.

Never fear the Dummies will run with this.
These people are incredible......what a desperate bunch of idiots! :o
We are honored to have a Salmon-American here at FR. It is a step forward for our diversity.
And to think this historic moment happened just a day before Labor Day.
At least she’s familiar with the dirty tricks game - a game that will be ratcheted up to hyper level between now and election day.
This is a remarkable woman and the bad guys will do and say anything to take her down.
There goes the Gay, Lesbian, Salmon and Transgender vote.
goodness gracious! these people are getting desperate. I GOT TICKET FOR FISHING WITHOUT A LICENSE... AND PLED GUILTY.. PAID THE FINE AND GOT ON WITH MY LIFE!
Maybe she’ll save the Klamath River hydro-electric dams.
How dare she use a gillnet without a permit!
Did she realize the carbon footpring of the gillnet!??

Thank you. It’s a long story, but let’s just say my father thought he was swimming downstream, but he was actually swimming upstream. That is when all heck broke out.
.
Holy crap!
This is hugh and series, akin to those hooligan Duke lacrosse players peeing in bushes.
