It shouldn't take "conservative ire" to get the Republican nominee to choose a Republican running mate. I'll vote for Jackass-Palin 2008, but maybe McCain should pledge to serve only one term.

...and maybe you should pledge to not confuse something written in the New York Times with the truth.

This is different from the account offered by the WSJ. As one of McCain’s advisers said, “The fact that Palin’s name is not mentioned much in the media, doesn’t mean she was not a front-runner!” or something to that effect. The McCain campaign is good in preventing or controlling any leak so far.

How the heck would the New York Times know? No one in the McCain camp (or any Republican) talks to them anymore. More wishful thinking and liberal fantasy from the Times.

T.S. NYT! They didn’t go with your choice to guarantee a Republican loss? Pitty.

Don't kid yourself: this is the "drive-bys" attempt to push McCain's buttons and to say, "See, he isn't a maverick." It's their attempt to goad him into dissing the base---just after he now, finally, got some energy and momentum on their side.

Sure, McCain thought about Joe. He, like Bush, has this goofy "can't we all get along" utopian vision of Washington, but in the end, real politics forced his hand, and that's good. I can live with that. It's not your motivations that count for me, it's your actions.

Picking Lieberman would have killed the party. As little influence a VP choice realistically has on affecting voters, that would have been the final straw for much of the base. Bad as BHO is, there is a point where even the “I’m voting _against_ X” bloc sees insufficient difference between the alternatives.

Picking Palin, as little influence VP choice has on voters, shows that McCain at least does not hold his base in contempt.

One full term? I’ll take 2 years and 1 day, so President Sarah can serve out the balance of that term, and run twice for election in her own name.

No way, no how would I consider voting for McLame and Lieberman.
I will happily support McCain-Palin.
Fact is I’d much prefer Palin be in the top spot.

Why don’t you look at the positive aspect, assuming this story is even true? When enough conservatives actually made their voices heard, McCain actually listened.

That’s why he’s also come around (a tiny bit, but it’s a start) on his illegal immigration stance.

If Lieberman was a true friend to McCain, he’d’ve refused the job.

Would it be news that liberal ire might prevent Obama from picking someone like Lieberman to run with him?

I think there is only one person responsible for McCain not picking Lieberman — other than McCain himself — and that’s Joe Lieberman.

If there is one thing I do know about McCain, and this is not really a bad thing in my mind, is that he’s not going to do anything just because someone else wants him to do it.

I think Lieberman told John he wouldn’t accept the nomination if it was offered because he really does want McCain to win — or rather he wants Obama to lose, and he’s savvy enough to know that the damage of his nomination might kill the chances McCain winning.

But that’s all water over the dam now. I am totally thrilled with his choice of Sarah and excited about this political cycle for the first time since it began.

She really is a game changer.

advisers close to the campaign said, Mr. McCain had wanted to name as his running mate his good friend Senator Joseph I. Lieberman

I had expected him to name Lieberman.

That would have definitely lost him the election.

Now, with Palin, he has a good chance of winning, and winning in a big way, if Palin continues to show increasing political strength, growing knowledge of worldly affairs, and strong conservative values.

McCain better thank his lucky stars that he listened to his advisers on this on.

I suspect the powers that be in the GOP made the wise Palin choice for McNutbag.

FWIW, I watched a segment on FNC last week where Lieberman reportedly told McCain, “If you pick me, you will lose.” I don’t doubt that there’s some truth to this article, but it is the NYT and therefore needs to have a reputable source referenced.

If Palin’s name had been seriously floated, Biden would not have been chosen by O’Bama.

Hillary would be the VP candidate. And a very formidable ticket.

McCain pulled the rope-a-dope on O’Bama.
By letting the usual ‘suspects’ names to be floated,
Leiberman ( the ‘integrity’ dude who changes his values depending on whose ticket he’s on)

Romney, probably a good choice as far as ability but likely unelectable because of his religion.

Graham, what can you say,
and others.

O’Bama thought he needed some gravitas ( he does) and who better than an old Washington insider. He didn’t want Hillary ( can’t fault that) and didn’t think he needed her.

Ooops!
