Romney to Meet with Utah Delegates

Romney to meet with Utah GOP delegates By Lisa Riley Roche Deseret News Published: Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 12:45 a.m. MDT 0 comments RELATED CONTENT | E-MAIL | PRINT | FONT + - McCain's choice alters campaign Utah delegates praise Palin ST. PAUL, Minn. — Mitt Romney may not be on the GOP ticket, but Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention will no doubt give him a hero's welcome when he visits them at their Monday morning breakfast meeting. "Next to John McCain and Sarah Palin, right now there is not a hotter name at this convention than Mitt Romney," Utah Republican Party Chairman Stan Lockhart told the Deseret News. "The fact we're getting him is pretty spectacular, given the fact he already knows where we stand."

Romney is focusing his attention during the four-day convention that begins Monday in St. Paul on swing states like Michigan and Ohio. But after repeated requests, he's making his first stop in Minnesota the Sofitel Hotel in nearby Bloomington to greet the Utah delegation.

After all, Utah gave him an overwhelming 90 percent of the vote in the state's Feb. 5 GOP presidential primary — and at least $6 million in contributions to his campaign. Romney, the leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like the majority of Utahns, dropped out of the presidential race in late February.

Story continues below He was seen as a top candidate to join McCain on the November ballot as the Arizona senator's running mate. But McCain stunned the political world on Friday by naming Palin, 44, Alaska's youngest ever and first female governor. Romney is set to campaign Sunday with McCain and Palin at a "Road to the Convention Rally" at a baseball stadium outside St. Louis.

On Tuesday, Romney is scheduled to address the convention. His speaking slot has not yet been announced. But as a likely presidential candidate in 2012 if the Republicans fail to keep the White House, Romney is expected to speak in prime time.

While in Minnesota, Romney will also hold fundraisers for congressional candidates, serve a meal in a Salvation Army soup kitchen, speak to the conservative Christian International Democratic Union on "The Future of the Republican Party," and address a meeting of the Republican Governors Association.

Freep-mail me to get on or off my pro-life and Catholic List:

Please ping me to note-worthy Pro-Life or Catholic threads, or other threads of interest.

In fact, a real Christian doesn’t even have to go to church since it is about a personal relationship anyways.
Me, I am off to Sunday Mass. Our Lord said to obey His Father. Those Ten Commandments inlude a very specific instruction regards the Sabbath. I think He meant what He said.

If Roney is truly interested in serving his country in high-level politics, then he should go back to Massachusetts, run for Senator, and unseat Kerry.

He doesn't want to be a senator. He wants to be president.

We need to stop attacking our own. I sure don’t like the way some of Fred’s supporters attacked Mitt.

Lets get one thing straight here.

It was the Mitt supporters who were the most vile.

They attacked Jeri Thompson, calling her everything from a prostitute to a slut.

No one attacked the Romney family that way.

I agree with you that Mitt has been a class act since losing. I won't say the same for his supporters.

That sounds fair to me. Ultimately it is the common good that matters, not the success or failure of one person. The Democrats have made it their business to play dirty politics in every way they can. I just think we need to be careful and make sure we don’t do their work for them.

Romney can’t be compared to Hillary. If Romney was like her he would have never dropped out and been a spokesperson for McCain. Romney has been doing a very good job of being articulate for McCain. Now I admit earlier in the week he looked a little depressed probably when he realized he wasn’t picked for VP. But he has the right attitude. I was personally a little surprised to hear that he is already going to appear on the campaign trail and that he is going to speak at the convention. It’s nothing like Hillary at all. She was busy promoting herself at the convention. She only grudingly and said anything to promote Obama.

This is what it has always been about, Fred supporters upset with Mitt supporters because Mitt was more successful on the campaign trail. Fred’s wife was not really appropriate for a candidate’s wife. She was too Hollywood now that you mention it. But I disagree with you. I think Mitt supporters were usually very nice. I do agree Mitt has acted very classy. What is Fred doing? Is he helping out on the campaign trial?

You have a good point about observing the Sabbath, I plan to go to church today.

See there you go again. A classless comment from a Mittwitt.

Obviously McCain figured out that picking Romney would be a major error in judgment and for one basic reason. With Romney on the ticket McCain would have lost votes.

McCain showed character and courage in choosing Sarah Palin. She has been a consistent conservative her entire adult life. Many pro-life and Evangelical voters who were sitting on the fence unsure about McCain, will now gladly vote for the GOP ticket. That wouldn't have happened with Romney as his running mate. Palin will also appeal to many Independent voters and even some centrist women voters who thought Obama left them out in the cold by totally ignoring the Hillary factor.

The daily campaign effort and the media reaction to how Palin handles herself will also be important to whether she can whether the endless attacks from the liberal establishment. The debate with Biden will also be critcal.

What is classless about stating the obvious? Face it, there was something a little offensive about seeing a much older man seeking the presidency who waited a long, long time to get married, to only end up with a wife who lacked modesty. Look at Palin in contrast to Fred’s wife. Palin is beautiful and appropriate. Palin even though she is beautiful is not offensive in anyway. She is a good strong Christian woman who just happens to be beautiful.

[Fred’s wife was not really appropriate for a candidate’s wife. She was too Hollywood now that you mention it.]

And Mitt’s wife was groomed from the age of 16 by his Dad, so I suspect she was too Gullible now that you mention it.

You gave me something to think about even though I was defending Mitt. I guess that’s the price he paid for at one time being pro-abortion. That’s the thing that people forget, even though we make mistakes, we sometimes forget that there are still consequences. I guess this is Mitt’s consequence. But I still believe that he has changed. Maybe that’s why he is able to be so classy, maybe he realizes this is his consequence. That’s ok. I’ve been there too. That’s just part of life.

You guys never cease to amaze me.

If Romney didn't inject $50-million of his own money into his campaign coffers, he would never have made it as far as he did in the GOP primaries. PERIOD!

Lets not forget. It was Fred Thompson's possible entrance into the race during the spring and summer of 2007 that started to knock down the Giuliani campaign.

And need I remind you, bringing down Rudy was the major objective of Free Republic at that time. Thank you, Fred!

For most of the GOP primary season, your guy Romney was barely a footnote around this forum. And he wasn't doing much better out in country either.

Is this what is at the core of your resentment of Mitt? Is it that you feel were it not for his millions maybe Fred would have done better? Come on, let’s get it out into the open.

It never crossed my mind whether Fred’s campaign effort would have been helped by Romney saving his $50-million and dropping out sooner, rather than later.

Fact remains. I always have an ill feeling towards anyone who spends a lifetime in support of liberal issues and liberal causes. Romney calling himself a pro-life conservative never convinced me. I’m not sure Romney believed his own propaganda.

Some people had real concerns for why they wouldn’t support Romney, but many didn’t support him only because he was a Mormon.

Sources?

It'd be nice if all the *you didn't support Mitt because of his religion* folks would actually support their statements with some facts instead of just accusations and speculation.

Saying so doesn't make it so.

*real Christians don’t do this*, *real Christians don’t do that*.

Sounds more like trying to manipulate others into doing what you want them to by laying a guilt trip on them than anything.

Sorry, not buying it.

No. As a REAL Christian (say that in capitols because there are some on FR who believe if you did not support MR you are not a real Christian) I did not support MR because he has his whole political life until about a year ago been a liberal.

He governed as such and ran as such.

Not because he is an ldser but because he is a nor-eastern Republican liberal-that is why I did not support him.
