Sarah Palin: conservatives find the girl of their dreams ('Palin is as tough as nails')

When Sarah Palin stepped into the spotlight as John McCain’s running mate in Dayton, Ohio, and promised that women could “shatter that glass ceiling once and for all”, it was an electrifying moment in a presidential election that had already produced its share of upsets and surprises.

History was on the march again the morning after Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept his party’s White House nomination. After the fireworks, the 80,000-strong crowd who had cheered Obama to the skies at the Mile High stadium in Denver woke up with a hangover.

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling,” said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. “That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.”

With her beehive hairdo and retro specs, Palin, 44, has a “naughty librarian vibe”, according to Craig Ferguson, the Scottish comedian who stars on late-night US television. However, the selection of Palin, the governor of Alaska and a mother of five, as the first female Republican vice-presidential nominee is no joke for the Democrats.

Indeed...

I don't think that she will have to declare or reaffirm or recraft or repackage her patriotism. It's just there and it's real...

If I can remember, I’ll let you know. Someone older, not so attractive, and bitter. (I know, I know.) That’s why I was surprised.

It is really bugging me now that I can’t put my finger on who. Oh well.

Camille’s not bitter in the least.

Acerbic at times, but that’s different.

Tina Fey’s not even on the cast of SNL anymore.

I know she's not. They have to go get her for a two-month commitment. But, hey, if enough folks are suggesting it, SNL would be stupid to ignore that. (Of course, they've been stupid before).

You wanna know something sad: Everybody thinks that they're old enough to remember when SNL (and maybe even Doonesbury) were actually funny. Only some of us (like you and me) are right about that.

See above.

They have guest hosts, don't they? And they bring back their former stars on occasion. The lowpoint of this was practically making John Goodman a cast member when Linda Tripp was in the news.

I don’t share the enthusiasm for Palin that many on Free Republic do. I think her choice was a weak attempt to pander to female voters with no regard as to her qualifications to assume the presidency should McCain be unable to complete his term. Frankly, I doubt whether the majority of Americans are ready to have such an inexperienced woman one heartbeat away from the presidency, especially when there are other, better choices within the Republican Party.

To me, Palin’s choice practically guarantees an Obama/Biden victory in November. The Democrats will carry (moving roughly from west to east) Hawaii, California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island, Virginia, the District of Columbia and Florida. It’s also possible North Carolina and Louisiana will go to the democrats. On election night, if Virginia, North Carolina and Florida go early for the Democrats, you can go to bed knowing the landslide has begun.

McCain’s VP selection only guarantees Nobama’s victory if many Conservatives think as you say you do.

Pander? I think there are men with her conservative credentials, but they don't balance the ticket with youth, outsider status, and legacies of flip-flopping. (See Thompson, Pawlenty, Rommney et al)

As conservative as they come, smart and bucking party dogma, she fits.

NOW, let's talk about the intangibles: women voters over 30, solidifying the base with solid prolife, pro-gun stands and a "citizen" elected official and you've got a "Ms Smith goes to Washington" story that the country loves... Hands down, a winner
