Republican John McCain's surprise announcement Friday of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate - some 16 hours after Democrat Barack Obama's historic speech accepting his partys presidential nomination - has possibly stunted any Obama convention bump, the latest Zogby Interactive flash poll of the race shows.
The latest nationwide survey, begun Friday afternoon after the McCain announcement of Palin as running mate and completed mid-afternoon today, shows McCain/Palin at 47%, compared to 45% support for Obama/Biden.
In other words, the race is a dead heat.
The interactive online Zogby survey shows that both Obama and McCain have solidified the support among their own parties - Obama won 86% support of Democrats and McCain 89% of Republicans in a two-way head-to-head poll question not including the running mates. When Biden and Palin are added to the mix, Obama's Democratic support remains at 86%, while McCain's increases to 92%.
After the McCain "Veep" announcement on Friday, Palin was almost immediately hailed as a strong conservative, and those voters have rallied to the GOP ticket, the survey shows. Republicans gather in St. Paul, Minnesota this week to officially nominate McCain and Palin as their presidential ticket.
Overall, 52% said the selection of Palin as the GOP vice presidential nominee helps the Republican ticket, compared to 29% who said it hurt. Another 10% said it made no difference, while 10% were unsure. Among independent voters, 52% said it helps, while 26% said it would hurt. Among women, 48% said it would help, while 29% said it would hurt the GOP ticket. Among Republicans, the choice was a big hit - as 87% said it would help, and just 3% said it would hurt.

Yes! It was very, very good. Brilliantly conceived, flawlessly executed. I couldn’t be more impressed with Team McCain and the campaign they are running. And I’m extremely thankful it isn’t Lieberman. Oy.
Did they twist themselves into a pretzel in an attempt to explain how Palin is "soooo inexperienced" and yet Obama the Empty is sooo "presidential."
Only’ cuse dead demonrats vote
? What was the final?
Okay, I;m willing to be a bit superstitious.
But, she’s the best running mate McCain could have picked. No baggage, no preconceived notions. Brought the base back. NRA, Pro-life, fiscal conservative, executive experience, bucked the status-quo. And she’s a woman with 5 kids!! A dream come true.
“When you put the Obama Resume up against the Palin Resume,
Sarah Palin is more qualified to be President of the U.S.”
She’s better than McCain also, but we can let the old codger warm the chair for 4 years.
So in reality, Obama was just a pimp for the Chicago vote fraud all those years, under the definition of "community organizer?"
“you have a good humor!”
Make mine an ice cream sandwich!
My ex in-laws likewise are rabid Democrats, and today told my daughter they would never support Obama, and are voting for McCain.
Amazingly enough, my ex in-laws were such nutso Democrats they snuck over my house in 2004 and ripped down all my Bush/Cheney yard signs.... and put Kerry/Edwards signs all up and down the street.
They are the type of Democrats who go around claiming that all Republicans are "rich cheapskates who just want to keep the little people down."
I almost fell off my chair when my daughter told me they rejected Obama the Empty. (of course they are also out loud racists who toss the "n-word" around like its nothing)
Actually, I think there's something to it, depending on which state is being polled.
Here in Pennsylvania, nearly all polls in 2006 had Lynn Swan down by about 10% right before Election Day, and Swan ended up losing by more than 20%, if I recall correctly.
My office-mate in 1992 in SF bragged about voting twice for Slick and the other Dem dreck.
Never mind the myths, historical data shows that Obama polls about 4% better than his actual results.
Even worse, all of a sudden we like Zogby Interactive...
Listen, I think Palin was a great pick and I also think the Democrat convention bounce is going to be of the dead-cat variety. But even I don't think McCain is really up by two at this point.
Obama has never won a contested election in his life. He won in Chicago by having his opponent’s petitions thrown out and he won his US Senate seat when somebody happened to leak his opponent’s fabulously salacious sealed divorce record during the campaign.
The only reason he beat Hillary is because most of those folks were voting against Hillary and he had a core of supporters that went from caucus to caucus, voting over and over again.
It's going to hit Cajun country, my wife's people. Their environs are low-lying but not below sea level, so there will not be the weeks of stagnant pools of water we saw last time. And they are tough as boots, the kind of folks who will help their neighbors and themselves without waiting for the government to show up to rescue them. It will be very different this time.
