John McCain & Sarah Palin on Shattering the Glass Ceiling
People Magazine ^ | Friday August 29, 2008 | Sandra Sobieraj Westfall

Even the kids were in the dark.

Meghan McCain, 23, didn't find out until a few hours before the rest of the nation. Track Palin, 19, an Army private on base in Fairbanks, Alaska, got the news in a text message an hour before his mother, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took the stage in Dayton, Ohio, as John McCain's pick to be his running mate. "I said, 'Track! Turn the TV on in an hour,'" Sarah Palin told PEOPLE. "He says, 'What does this mean? Am I going to have to crawl in a hole?' And I said, 'No!' Because he had no idea; he doesn't even know where we are."

Where they were was the Nutter Center college sports arena in Dayton, Ohio. And PEOPLE was there for an exclusive backstage interview with the McCain and Palin families suddenly joined in the campaign for the White House. Sarah Palin, in ruby red peep-toe platform heels that showed off a pink French-style pedicure, first ducked into a holding room to change the diaper of her just-up-from-a-nap 4 1/2-month-old son, Trig.

The two families were all smiles...

When Palin shatters the glass ceiling...

Obama will shatter the glass floor.

Cheers!

SARAH PALIN:
Morning person. Yup. We don't sleep much. Too much to do. What I've had to do, though, is in the middle of the night, put down the BlackBerries and pick up the breast pump. Do a couple of things different and still get it all done.

Damn that's golden. Millions of women reading that across the country are nodding their head, saying "yup, I've been there."

I wish he were standing a little closer to her and had his chin up higher. Oh well, Palin and her husband looking great matters more. ;)

Picking Sarah Palin to be Vice President is a victorious partnership for conservatives! Noting could be clearer. McCain showed us he knew what was at stake, and he demonstrated the judgment to fill the VP slot with an unapologetic, dyed in the wool conservative. Palin is a conservative for conservatives.

I wasn’t sure whether I was going to bother voting on November 4th. Now I will be proud to vote McCain Palin. Sarah Palin is the future of our party and the conservative movement!

Beautiful families. Sarah and Mr. Palin both needs stylists, though.

Yep. Great choice in Palin but it reminds me of what happened when Prince Charles married Diana. She overshadowed Charles thoroughly. I think here, that's a good thing. She just brought his value up considerably albeit most will be more interested in hearing and seeing her.

I disagree. Our culture has become consumed with style. If the Palins choose to change their unique style- fine.

Meanwhile- they’re both extremely attractive, authentic Americans. Not “stars”.

In fact- I can see Sarah Palin becoming a trendsetter. Loose french twist and glasses- she’s elegant. Speaking of style- check out her red shoes ;)

She’s coming to Washington, which is a sophisticated place, so she needs to look put together. After living in a number of cities and towns around the US, including DC, I’ve found that the clothes and grooming that look appropriate in one place don’t necessarily give you the image you want in another place. She can still have an unpretentious, unmadeup look, she just needs to be more classic in order to be authoritative all over the US and all over the world.

Apparently Cindy McCain has mastered the trick I had to learn when I was married to a shorter man—cocking one hip to lose an inch in height so as not to seem too much bigger. She is very elegant and graceful.

Michelle Obama needs a few big shots of Botox so she doesn’t look like such a foul-tempered b.

John McCain often looks very stiff in pictures. This is the result of having both shoulders broken during the war.

Gov. Palin and her family look just fine. It is Washington that needs to change - valuing substance over style. Gov. Palin is a woman I whom respect - and is quite attractive. She has all she needs; Nancy Pelosi look out - Washington will have a real American woman!

Sarah is the ultimate class act!!
She takes the cake on elegance and a put together package, and she’s not going to take a back seat to anyone.
In the closeups her makeup is flawless.
The black suit is as classic as it gets.
Why the criticism?

Some women choose to adhere to the scriptural admonition that when a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her. When women get those short, butchey or medium shaggy cuts, the hair tends to look like a “stump full of grandaddies” when they’re out in the wind. Sarah’s hair is in an elegant, serious, classic style that will not fly all over in the wind, her clothes are classic and elegant right down to the shoes. Oh, and she’s wearing plenty of makeup and accessories.

A contributor to this blog yesterday said that the baby’s name, Trig, is from the Norse language. That likely is correct, although in Norwegian it is spelled “Trygg.” It means “safe, secure,” and in light of that baby’s much-discussed “special care” needs, it seems almost eerily appropriate. I do not know whether Sarah has any roots in the Norse culture; her maiden name, Heath, suggests England to me, but perhaps her mother’s immigrant background is Norse.

Good question. She’s natural and well put together and while looking that way she’s already accomplished more than Obama & Biden put together and accomplished it while raising a family, participating in the PTA, attending sporting events, camping, shooting, skinning and cooking game, fishing and enjoying life that Dems can’t even imagine. Most dems are completely out of their element if there aren’t street lights on at dusk, lighting everything visible, and pavement covering 99% of their habitat. Wilderness is the grass patch near their home for doggy business. Roughing it to a dem is a hotel without 24 hour room service and having to pay the bill themselves.
