Michael Stipe has told Sky News that he may leave America if John McCain wins the US election.
The REM frontman is an outspoken supporter of Barack Obama and said the Democrat's election would give his country the chance to move on from the aftermath of 9/11.
The 48-year-old revealed he had stayed up overnight because he wanted to experience Senator Obama's nomination acceptance speech live and said he hoped America would be ready to elect its first black president on polling day.
Speaking exclusively to Sky News ahead of the band's appearance at London's Twickenham stadium, Stipe also talked about the impact that illegal downloading has had on the music industry, warning that film companies will be next to face a huge fall in profits.
Asked what he felt it would mean for America if Senator McCain wins the election, Stipe smiled and said: "Well I'd have to move to England."
He went on to say that he admired the war veteran's record but criticised the Republicans' record since the turn of the century.
"It is unfathomable to me as an American and a world citizen that anyone would vote for that man," he said.
"He served his country and he did a good job as a serviceman, I will honour him for that, but he is not presidential material."

BTW...where is that bespectacled goofy dorky Jeanine Garrafolo these days?
Stipe: Blah blah blah
So Michael Stipes would move to England if McCain gets elected? You mean the same England that still has a dynasty, is part of Europe, is ruled by an older white male, and used to have a large Empire, along with being a strong ally of the USA, a good amount in foreign policy, and has the native language of English? Hey Stipes, if you are so much into your bleeding heart multiculturalism and citizen of the world mentality, move to Zimbabwe, OK!?
Maybe you can vote Mugabe out of power.
Personally it is confusing to me that celebrities would either move to Europe while they criticize us as being “Euro-Centric” or to Canada but not to Africa or Mexico. Says a lot doesn’t it?
Yawn, wake me so I can send him off with a middle finger goodbe
Buh-bye now.

So move already, no one's stopping you.
BTW, mr 'REM frontman' your stay in England will be short. The first time you see they tax your income at 90% you'll be outta there pdq.
Maybe you can try Zimbabwe next.
Wow. An extra bonus for a McCain win.
BUHHHHHH-BYE!

Great news. One more worthless piece of crap that will not befloating around our Country............
Guess I can’t listen to them anymore. Shame because those guys had some good songs.
“It is unfathomable to me as an American and a world citizen that anyone would vote for that man,” he said.
There in lies your problem If you are a world citizen then youre ARE NOT an American.
ROFL. Michael Stipe? Is he still swirling around the leftist toilet bowl? I thought he must have succumbed to the drugs a long time ago? Good riddance, Stipe!!
p.s. I can confess to liking a few REM songs in the early ‘90s but I always thought they were much over-rated. They’re basically a campus band that was a bit better than most..... but never worthy of national and international acclaim, IMHO.
Another air-head and another empty promise.
No, Michael, say it isn’t so...what loss that would be to the cultural fabric of America..
Why these idiots actually think we would give a %#$^ what they think or do does demonstrates how incredibly narcissic they are...
I’m trying to care...trying...trying...trying...nope, don’t care...
If you are going, get gone fer pete's sake.
Oh pooh! All the crazy libs promised to leave when Bush was elected. As usual their words and promises don’t mean a thing. But I must admit I do keep hoping.
Don’t let the bathroom stall door hit your ass on the way out.
He better quit before he gets fired.
