Is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Idaho Outdoors Tough? [Heart Warming Article]
Idaho Statesman ^ | 08/30/09 | Roger Phillips

Her resume and those who know her suggest that she indeed has hunting and fishing credentials.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took a lot of folks by surprise Friday as John McCain's choice for vice president, and as the country gets to know her, much attention is being paid to her hunting and fishing credentials.

So does she measure up to the hype?

"She's a good outdoors person who will look out for outdoors interests," said Wayne Kabut, a hunting guide in Palin's hometown, Wasilla.

Kabut said he knows her personally, which isn't surprising in an Alaskan town of about 9,000 people.

When he talked to us Friday, he was heading out for a bear hunt, and if an Alaskan bear hunting guide gives Palin a favorable nod, she's probably not a poser.

Other things on her resume seem to back it up. She and her family have worked a setnet site on the Nushagak River in Bristol Bay.

That's a tough job that involves staking a gill net to shore and going out in any and all weather conditions to remove the fish and keep debris out of the net.

It requires long, hard hours living under primitive conditions, usually a shack on the beach.

The Palins' kids' names include Bristol, which one must assume is after Bristol Bay. Piper, my guess, comes from the Piper Cub, which is a workhorse bush plane. And Willow is after the Alaska town and the bush, I presume.

U.S. News and World Report said her favorite food is moose stew, which is kind of head-scratcher.

Shouldn't it be moose steak?

But if you're a politician looking to impress the hook and bullet crowd, it's better to be associated with moose stew from the backcountry than arugula from Whole Foods.

Many in the MSM are grasping to get negative spin on this woman, but they deeper they look, the more extraordinary she becomes.

She is what Hillary wanted to be.

I'd put her hunting credentials up against Romney's or Kerry's any day. I don't think have to worry about photo ops of her in hunting gear freshly purchased from Wal-Mart.

Now that’s a great statement. LOL.

I'm guessing wild moose might be a bit tough as a steak and would be tenderized by slow cooking as a stew.

I’d like to see FR start a separate thread of “Great Moose Recipes” so we can all enjoy a heapin’-helpin’ of stew or whatever when the returns roll in Nov 4th. :-)

I've never had moose, but I once had caribou tenderloin, and it was as tender and tasty as any cut of beef I've ever eaten.

Caribou and antelope, IMO, are about the best meat eating experience I have ever had. Tenders are called that for a reason and both tenderloin and steak are only a small portion of any animal. One can get tired of ground meat and since a live moose is about 1,000 pounds, I am thinking that one can become partial to recipes that can slow cook and be tasty.Moose steak is wonderful and I am sure slow cooked moose stew has a lot of flavor, too.

Interestingly enough, there has recently been a foodie trend towards game and in the UK, a return to traditional hunting recipes among cutting-edge chefs. Various organ/offal recipes have even appeared on the cooking shows within the past year, as chefs strive to waste less. Sarah Palin may be found to be more of a genuine gourmet than BO. Around here, even the vegetarians will make an exception for venison.

I could look forward to a VPOTUS who can shoot, butcher and cook her own game. This woman will be a spokesperson for land owners, hunters, fishermen and, by extension, private property rights.

And, unlike our current VP, if she shots someone while hunting we will know it wasn't an accident!
