Todd Palin unique among nation's 5 first husbands
Anchorage Daily News ^ | May 27, 2007 | JEANNETTE J. LEE

THE MAN: He's worked the oil patch, won the Iron Dog and takes care of the kids

That same week, his wife, Gov. Sarah Palin, was in Juneau requesting more money for the state budget and assuring legislators they'd soon see her plan for a natural gas pipeline that could one day be the most expensive construction project in North America. Then she flew to Fairbanks to wave her exhausted husband across the finish line.

It's not just his title as the state's reigning snowmobile co-champion that sets 42-year-old Todd Palin apart from the nation's other first spouses. And it's not that he's one of just five who are men.

White-collar jobs in law, education or health care are typical among the current crop of first spouses, but Palin spent nearly 20 years as a blue-collar employee in the oil fields of the North Slope. And every summer he heads west to his birthplace in Dillingham to work the Bristol Bay commercial salmon fishery from his property on the Nushagak River.

A lifetime of manual labor in the state's two largest and most physically demanding industries is helping Palin carve out his role as Alaska's first spouse, or "first dude," a nickname he has in common with the Kansas governor's husband, Gary Sebelius.

Like other first spouses around the country, Palin has been asked to champion an array of causes or institutions since his wife took office in December.

His favorite is steering young Alaskans toward stable jobs in the oil and gas industry. It's a singular choice among his counterparts, whose pet issues include schools, public health, domestic violence, poverty or the arts.

Another article on FR says he is 1/4 Yup’ik.

Another article, link at post 84 on this thread says:

“His Yup’ik grandmother, Helena Andree, grew up in a traditional Native household in Bristol Bay and now lives in Homer.”

If his grandmother is Yup’ik, then his mother is 1/2 Yu’pik. That would make Todd 1/4 Yupik.

There was another article saying his mother is 1/4 Yu’pik
which whould mean he is 1/8.

He certainly has gorgeous blue eyes!

Great idea...but they might get stale on the way and lose their potency. (I’d have to mail them, LOL.)

>> I wonder if she wears those glasses for gravitas?

Want my guess? She wears them because she needs vision correction to see well, and wearing contact lenses requires a lot of fussing around with, which is a drag if you’re busy. Also, contact lenses and outdoor activities don’t always mix (dust, spray, temperature extremes, etc.)

I have some experience with this issue. I had contacts when I was younger, and gave them up for just those reasons.

>> The only thing I can see is that it takes away the argument that Obama is lightly experienced

This won’t be a problem if the campaign takes the TRUTH and properly frames it as a positive message.

* The ticket is in the right order — the experienced guy is at the TOP. The Donkees’ ticket is inverted, with the noob at the top and the old fart at the bottom.

* McCain has been criticised on the age issue. She adds youth and vigor to the ticket.

* She and Obama have about the same number of *years* of experience — but Gov. Palin’s experience is in an EXECUTIVE job, not a bloviating senate position.

And so forth.

>> He can make a woman like her happy and keep his manhood intact...he’s a man’s man.

Exactly.

Strong, secure, confident men are NOT bothered by strong, secure, confident women.

In fact, we enjoy them. Mrs. Tick is like that.

“Northern Exposure”

I liked that show, it was almost the only TV show I ever watched semi-regularly in my entire life! Could tell it was written by big-time libs though, that was always annoying...... but I just liked the idea of a show that was so different from the tedious sit-com fare that’s usually on the networks.

I read that he has one grandmother who is Inuit, so that would make him 1/4 Inuit.

Governor Palin deals with more real decisions in a month than Obambi has in his entire political career, given that Obambi has never held an executive position and has spent most of his brief legislative career as a total no-show or else casting “present” votes (in Illinois Senate) in order to avoid taking a stand. If the MSM and Demagogues want to get into a detailed comparison of the two records it will quickly become evident that Obambi HAS NO RECORD worth speaking of...... so of course the drive-bys will have to limit themselves to potshots.

We can add to your observations, a representative of our non-lower-48 states in each campaign.

A funny little quirk about this race, is that McCain named his first daughter Sidney, and BHO’s mother was named Sidney.

To be filed in the ‘small world’ category.
