The Base Hearts Sarah Palin
FoxNews.com ^ | 8-29-08 | James Pinkerton

The Base will love Sarah Palin—the Republican base that is. Rush Limbaugh has been openly arguing for her on his show, and John McCain was evidently listening. But I think that she has great potential to win over swing voters in the middle, too.

She’s a governor, which is obviously an asset in governing. She’s pro-gun, and she is pro-life. And not just pro-life in practice: Her youngest child is a Down’s Syndrome baby. “Perfect in my eyes,” she said, clear as a bell. That’s what The Base wants to hear—she talks the talk, and then walks the walk.

And speaking of walking, did I mention that she is authentic hunter and outdoorswoman—she and her whole family?

And of course, she has a son who enlisted in the Army and is on his way to Iraq. That’s walking the walk, too.

She’s also something of a reformer: She took on the entrenched Republican hierarchs in Alaska, and beat them to get where she is now, governor of Alaska.

Speaking for myself, I think that Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, would have been the best choice for McCain. I think he would have made The Base happy, too, but he has had much more executive experience and is a proven campaigner—after all, he won the Iowa Caucuses earlier this year. McCain has many great attributes, but as President, he will need the steadiest of energetic executive hands when it comes to the management of the federal government and dealing with the 50 states. Something to think about, in particular, as Hurricane Gustav bears down on Louisiana.

But that’s all moot now. Palin is a strong choice for McCain. The Base loves her, and I expect that America will, too.

I heart her, too...as long as the McCain camp doesn't force her to spew a bunch of populist drivel on the campaign trail.

Let Sarah Palin be Sarah Palin. She'll attract a lot of voters without pandering.

And, Jim, a Huckster pick would not have made most of the Base happy.

I’m going to send John boy a donation. I can’t believe he went for my #1 pick.

Richard Viguerie is already predicting a landslide victory for the GOP in Nov.

I heart Sarah Palin. It’s an inspired choice.

Plus, by not picking any of his primary opponents he’s free of all the negative things they said about him. He can now go hardcore with the commercials of Dem primary opponents attacking Obama. Brilliant.

I’m Indie, voted for Obambi in the primary here (until I really got to see what the empty suit was like), worked for Governor Wilder’s campaign in VA, and like this choice very, very much.

Great choice of a fantastic Governor, fighter, working mother, and all around American.

It has been a cooler-than-normal summer in Anchorage this year. Where does she stand on globull warming?

“...I’m going to send John boy a donation. I can’t believe he went for my #1 pick...”

Send him $12. That is equal to one years income for Obama’s brother.

I’ve been happy about this all day! She strikes me as a very - well, normal person. She obviously likes being a politician, likes governing, likes the challenges and has her own ideas about how things should be - but she’s not a power crazed loony who sees herself as a savior. What a relief!

Good job, Johnny - keep this up, and pull out one or two of the knives you put in our backs the past few years, and I'll put your real name back on the sign....

Unfortunately, she’ll probably have to echo McCain’s stupid stance.

She favors drilling in ANWR, while McCain does not.

Let me go on record, I was right here on FR saying after Fred dropped out, that “a McCain for President Yard sign will never cast its shadow on my front lawn”. Stopping short of saying I would never vote for him.
Well let me tell you, with his performance at Saddelback, his brilliant new style of ads, and now picking Sarah Palin, I am so Pumped I can’t be contained.
I am using my lunch hour today to find websites to purchase bumper stickers, yard signs, T-shirts, heck right now I could break a taboo of mine and tattoo McCain/Palin 08 on my chest.
And yes, I am writing a check to his campaign. Obama is in big trouble.

I'm convinced that there are no talking heads who understand "the base" at all. Sarah Palin will energise the base like nobody has ever done before except perhaps President Reagan. She will bring droves of young pro life to the polls; Evangelicals, Catholics, Jews and even non-believers who nonetheless hold that killing unborn babies is wrong.

She will be a big hit with the pro gun guys in Ohio, Pa, West Virginia and Michigan.

She will appeal across the board to drill here/drill now folks and she will win the hearts and minds of every American who is fed up with earmarks and Bridges to Nowhere.

In short Sarah is a game changer Bigtime as VP Cheney would say.

And, Jim, a Huckster pick would not have made most of the Base happy.

Depends upon which base you are talking about.

Sarah Palin is a gun totin’, hockey playin’, life time member of the NRA that gets up at 3 o’clock in the morning to hunt moose with her father, hockey mother of five, wife of her high school sweetheart, a  lifetime fisherman who’s been in the union all of his life. She’s a pro-life environmentalist wanting to drill holes all over Alaska to lower the price I pay for gasoline.  Her eldest enlisted in the United States Army on September 11th last, and deploys to Iraq on September 11th in two weeks.  And to top it off she just thanked Hillary Clinton for putting 18,000,000 cracks in the glass ceiling, and promised those women she’d finish breaking though it.

And people ask if McCain made a good choice for VP?
