(CNN) A leading House Democrat said Thursday John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a "risky" move that could ultimately prove disastrous to the Republican prospects in November.
Meanwhile, a top Senate Democrat said the pick is a "Hail Mary pass" and a "roll of the dice," in what is the initial reactions from McCain's rival party.

I am with you!!
I am so excited. I couldn’t believe it when I logged online and saw he picked her.
I can really get behind this ticket now!
Not real bright are you? Palin is as conservative as they come. Take your sour grapes(which I suspect they are)and stuff them up your a**. Thanks and have a nice day!
A tax rebate is "socialist"?
Newroark, do you even know the meaning of the word "socialist"?
And what tax increase are you talking about? Please provide a little substantiation for your claims.
You're full of beans.Okay, what do you call a $1200 check from the government because gas prices went up? Or a doubling of taxes on the most productive oil fields left in the United States? Those have been her policies as Governor of Alaska, and if you think tossing in a good pro-life and NRA position counter-balances that, well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
And remember, we put an actor in office that faced down the Russian bear. Sarah Barracuda is her nickname. Find out why.
She's a governor.
Obama has absolutely no executive experience.
Wouldn't that be something!
Chunga, newroark keeps repeating these charges without documenting them.
The $1200 is not a tax rebate, my friend — Alaska has no taxes on individuals, except local option sales and property tax — only on businesses. These payments are directly from the State government to individuals and are not need based or means tested. So you tell me what ‘socialism’ means.
As far as ‘what tax’, well, I’m always glad to do people’s homework for them. Here’s a nice discussion from Ed Morrisey of what Alaska’s (Palin’s) tax increases were and are all about.

And you may want to note this was all written weeks ago, before Palin was more than a whisper of a rumor for being the VP candidate.
newroark will only be happy when Ayn Rand rises from the dead and is chosen as the veep pick by Harry Brown.
Yeah, McCain should have followed their advice and picked Lieberman. After all, we all know how much the MSM cares about Republicans and wants them to win.
I believe when Obama lived in Hawaii, he ran a LEMONADE stand - and asked the GOVERNMENT to bail him out!! :-)
If you are talking about Biden, he ran a hairdryer!!
And the Alaska Journal of Commerce talks about the $1200 rebate — so, yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, or Santa Clausette as the case may be:

So, have I done enough heavy lifting on the ‘do your research for you’ front that anyone would care to address the policy implications of Governor Palin’s positions on these matters?
My sentiments exactly.
I was really really impressed.
I think had the dems had any inkling of this choice O'Bama's would have been different.
McCain pulled the rope-a-dope on them. All the usual repubs mentioned, O'Bama chooses Biden, a Washington insider and unlikeable one at that.
Then he springs a breath of fresh air on the Country.
Hooray to McCain!!
Who did you want McCain to choose?
“Even before Palin pick McCain was certain to win the elections.”
Nothing is certain until it happens. I said in June that McCain *could* win *if* he did his campaign right.
Well, McCain is executing a brilliant and flawless campaign so far:
- Knocked Obama off-message with his mocking celeb ad.
- Got on board the drill now campaign
- Smoked Obama in the Saddleback forum.
- Obama made a dreadful pick of Biden, giving McCain an opening for the Hillary voters
- McCain made an inspired pick here that both excites the conservative base and will have appeal to independent voters, especially the downscale cultural conservative white voters clinging to guns, God and family
Sarah Palin is so exceedingly ‘normal’ that any attempts to paint her otherwise will backfire.
McCain is on track to a good solid win if he keeps up the momentum and can peel back the bogosity of Obama’s empty change message. Obama gave a good speech, his performance is on a par with Clinton 1992 so dont underestimate him, and it will win him the election if not responded to properly. But McCain appears up for the job.
MCCAIN/PALIN. Way to go!
Heh heh.
But seriously, let's review.
Newroark claimed that Palin doubled taxes on oil operators in Alaska.
That's completely false.
He linked to an article on hotair which quotes the complaints of a PR flak for BP.
BP is the company whose shoddy work caused a corroded pipeline that created at 200,000+ gallon oil spill in Alaska.
Translation: they're really bad tenants.
Governor Palin backed legislation to increase BP's corporate tax from 22.5% to 25% - I'm not sure what math translates that to a "doubling" of tax.
That's still quite low by almost any jurisdiction's standards, and after this tax bill was passed, Alaska was still named 4th best state in the nation by The Tax Foundation - an anti-tax watchdog organization.
Alaska, as most people know, pays its inhabitants a dividend each year from their profits as part owners of the state's oil fields.
In 2008, Governor Palin increased this by $1200 to reflect the increased pipeline revenue the state was earning.
Basically, Sarah Palin raised the rent 10% on the extremely lucrative property BP and ConocoPhilips are leasing from the state of Alaska.
She's a smart asset manager and is getting a better yield from the portfolio of state assets that it's her job to run.
