INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Witnesses reported seeing a red fireball and feeling a blast as far away as Charleston, after an explosion was reported at the Bayer Crop Science Plant in Institute at 10:35 p.m. Thursday. The explosion was heard at least as far away as Mink Shoals.
One Bayer employee has been transported to a burn center in Pittsburgh and another is still missing, said Bayer official Mike Wey. Earlier reports that one person had been killed could not be confirmed.

Prayers for all those in harm’s way...
Prayers up.
Any connection with the lawsuit by German beekeepers against Bayer for allegedly releasing a pesticide that decimated bee colonies. First heard about this lawsuit tonite on Coast to Coast talk radio.
I live about a mile from the plant. The boom nearly knocked me out of the bed. We had a 3 hour “shelter in place”.
I work there as a contractor at times and my most recent job there was in that unit. They just started up this week after a maintenance shutdown. Something went wrong and... boom.
I live 10 miles from the plant...the blast was powerful!
Institute is infamous for producing and stockpiling MIC....lessons learned from Bhopal have been VERY slow to translate to this area.
I have no idea what particular facility blew up, and pray it had nothing to do with MIC.
The shelter in place routine is taught primarily to group bodies of victims in one place, for easy identification and disposal.
