Convention Night (VP Speculation)

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today, U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign released its latest television ad, entitled "Convention Night." The ad features John McCain offering his congratulations to Barack Obama for receiving the nomination of the Democratic Party on this important day in American history. The ad will air on national cable and in key states.

“attack dog Biden vs a woman. That will also mess him up.”

And hey, if he starts getting rough, Sarah just needs to whip out the Baby and plunk it down on her lap and VOILA, instant evil Biden attack! Plus cute baby factor!

WIN!!

This ad is brilliant. Please tell me it ran far and wide. Portrays McCain as a total class act.

Contrast this with the "angry black man" Obama channeling Rev. Wright tonight and hurling absurd charges of treason at McCain.

“she won’t be a no name inexperienced woman once she’s VP and serving by the side of mcCain.”

That’s not how it works. The VP candidates go out on their own stumping in states the Prez candidate thinks are important to win. They don’t stay together. With a no-name up against a long-time name like Biden, there will be no time (there’s only 2 and not even 1/2 months left till Election Day) for people to get to know a Palin or a Pawlenty. Remember, this person will be going up against a Biden, whose track record in the Senate and as a Prez candidate himself in the primaries, is much, much better known. It’s like bringing a pea shooter to a gunfight.

So now Pawlenty's out apparently?

One could interpret the ad as "We haven't leaked our pick yet (today), but prepare for a surprise tomorrow!"

I think, Pawlenty is a solid choice. I always liked how he made fun of the PeTArds, but IMHO he doesn't bring too much new to the table. Romney is probably the safest choice, moderate enough to be attractive to the center, yet conservative enough to be acceptable to the base. However choosing Romney is like saying "Here is the man that can take over for me, after all, I might not run in four years". Pawlenty says "I'll be back in four, and in eight years time, this one will be ready".

Palin is a far more interesting, but also riskier choice. An inspired choice, because it allows McCain to attack hard both center (i.e. soccer moms and working class families who would have voted Clinton because of her experience) and the base (staunch pro-lifer). A risky choice because it might look like the Hillary democrats run the Republican agenda.

In the best case, Hillary supporters will carry McCain to victory, in the worst case right-wing die-hards will be put of by the "Hillary" theme of McCain's campaign. But as Republicans are more likely to unite behind a candidate than Democrats, the benefits should outweigh the risks.
