Obama: 'We are a better country than this' (Obama's speech)

Senator Barack Obama will promise change -- and spells out specifics such as tax cuts for the middle class -- as he accepts the Democratic presidential nomination tonight.

Obama also warns that Republican John McCain would mean four more years of President Bush's flawed policies, declaring “America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”.

Here are excerpts of the speech, titled "The American Promise," just released by Obama's campaign:

“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.

“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.

“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive.

“We meet at one of those defining moments – a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.

“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition

I just turned on Fox (9:05) and what a bunch of BS as Mike McDonald tries desperately and fails in every conceivable aspect of imitating Ray Charles in his rendition of America right down to the tempo, accompaniment, mannerisms and warbly voice.

Worst yet was his dedication to (paraphrasing as I thought I would get sick) to "all those who want our country back."

Hey, Mickey, you ain't Ray and you suck!!!

If this is any indication of how this night is going to be, its going to be a 5 refill, adult beverage night!!!

Thank you and precisely. I could not but help think of America's 'poor' and 'middle class' and should Obama win; how they might compare their lives and their future - as they live it - against the the realities of the 'poor' and 'more poor' who 'quantify' Russia's middle class and who historically, fill the Russian cities and countryside as they do in all totalitarian countries. Can they even imagine their 'health care' program?

Obama's promise is a LIE. . .he cannot create a 'heaven on earth'; and there is a 'hell to pay'; should enough people imagine otherwise.

The missing word tonight never uttered by Obama was FREEDOM. . .this is the first promise our Country holds and the most important one; but it does not factor well for 'Leftist Obama'. (Or, perhaps I just missed it?)

Would also bet that many in that audience have never held an American flag in their hands - ever. I hope it felt good; and that when John McCain wins; they will hang on to it.
