To protect free speech from the political whims of a few unelected bureaucrats in Washington, the Fairness Doctrine needs to be wiped off the books. These Members of Congress are hypocritical because they voted for a one-year ban on the so-called Fairness Doctrine but have thus far refused to sign on to the Discharge Petition in support of a permanent ban. If someone is going to support freedom of speech for one year they should support it permanently

Dude, forget the ‘fairness doctrine’, they have other ways of stifling opposition.

Its possible that over time, an energy tax, by making some computers, Web sites, blogs and perhaps cable TV channels too costly to maintain, could reduce the supply of information. If Americans are finally giving up SUVs because of high oil prices, might we not eventually do the same with some information technologies that only seem to fragment our society, not unite it? A reduced supply of information technology might at least gradually cause us to gravitate toward community-centered media such as local newspapers instead of the hyper-individualistic outlets we have now.
Bill Clinton used to complain that Rush Limbaugh had three hours a day to yak on the air and beat up on Bill.
We need the Rush Limbaughs of the world to expose people like Bill Clinton. Agree or disagree, all points of view should be heard. I fully supported Air America for the same reason, as the liberal/radical views should be heard too. When Air America went on the air, they could no longer say that there was a conservative monopoly on talk radio.
Whatever happened to Air America, are they still around? If not, and they lost out in talk radio marketplace of ideas, so be it. Because that’s capitalism and freedom both working together, if liberal /radical talk radio can’t survive.
I sent in a donation to Air America and never got my tote bag.
