Barack Obama lacks convention 'bounce'
The Telegraph ^ | August 28, 2008 | Toby Harnden and Alex Spillius

Barack Obama was due to arrive in Denver on Wednesday to claim the Democratic nomination amid fears that his party is split and he is being eclipsed by Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Opinion polls show that Mr Obama has received little or no "bounce" from the start of his convention or his picking Senator Joe Biden to be his running mate. The Gallup daily tracking poll had Mr Obama up by one percentage point on Monday but Mr McCain ahead by two on Tuesday.

Mr Obama will make history on Thursday night when he accepts his party's nomination, becoming the first black candidate of a major party in an American general election.

He will emerge from a mock Greek temple on Thursday night to be greeted by 80,000 people at an event designed like a rock concert. Also expected to be appearing will be the singers Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder.

But Mr Obama's advisers concede that he needs more than soaring rhetoric to win over swing voters and are concerned that the glitzy evening could be seized on by Republicans as evidence of a lack of substance.

I hate to say this, but they’ll get a huge bounce out of tonight. Klinton hit a big time homer tonight.

My wife and I will be making history in November. It will be the first time we’ve voted against a “black” presidential candidate.

No they won’t. No one’s watching, and they don’t care.

Besides, Clinton cannot reverse Obama’s unfavorables in the states that matter.

Yup. Expect about 10 points. Problem for McCain is Hurricaine Gustav. TX is mobilizing, expecting possibly NO hit. Pray that thing goes away. How could Bush and all our guys give speeches while the coast is being ravaged? We may not have a convention to get a bounce from.

Do yourself a favor and don’t fall into the “every good speech is a homerun” mindset. This convention will be a vapor in a week, the average American is surfing channels trying to avoid coverage of it. It is just a dog and pont show for their own red-meat followers, nothing more nothing less.

Don't worry, Obama will get his big bounce after his big speech at the Luitpoldhain Invesco Field.

I think we’ll start to see a big bounce in tomorrow’s tracking polls. I hope not, but I think we should be prepared for it because it is most likely coming.

Zogby and Rasmussen were on Hannity today talking about the polls. Zogby thought Obama would be up about 5 by the end of the convention. But he said by end of next week, it would be back to dead even.

He is usually pretty good. I remember him saying Obama would get about 6 points out of the European trip, but it would dissipate within the week (and it did).

I’m not. It was vintage Klinton. Now the MSM will take the best of it and use it to make Nobama look like “he’s ready”. On the other hand, Biden’s speech blew chunks and may have actually given McCain some good material.

I think a five point Obama lead after his convention is on the low side. Would love nothing more than to be wrong about that though.

I believe McCain needs to move into the lead by the time the GOP convention ends if he wants to win in November. If it is still tied in a couple of weeks, it will probably be close all the way to election day, and the RAT fraud this year is going to be unprecedented. It could swamp us.

If Osama does not get a convention bounce, he is going down for sure. Most of the time democrats count on getting the 10-15 pt. bounce like Klinton did. Even Algore got a decent bounce, although Kerry’s was slim.

I disagree. I think that if Stuttering Barry isn’t up by at least TEN points the weekend before the election, he’s losing. Wilder/Bradley Effect.
