ABC News: Greek Tragedy(Dem:"Obama temple", a disaster of mythical proportions...)
ABC News ^

1:50 pm MT: From ABC News' Rick Klein, author of The Note: So all the buzz today was supposed to be about two big Wednesday speeches -- Bill Clinton’s and Joe Biden.

Why, then, is everyone in Denver talking about stagecraft?

It’s simple: Reporters got their first glimpse of the stage where Barack Obama will deliver his speech tomorrow night at Invesco Field. Reuters described the set as similar to a "Greek temple."

Thus a legend -- not the good kind -- was born.

Said one Democrat: "This is a disaster of mythical proportions." Said another: "It's not enough that he wants to be president -- he wants to be Zeus." Said the first: "Will he send down thunderbolts from the mountain?"

Those are the Democrats -- though assuredly not Obama partisans. Cue the Republicans: The RNC blasted around an e-mail referring to the "Temple of Obama."

"Tomorrow you're going to see Obama come down from Olympus to be among us mere mortals," Michael Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, told reporters in Denver.

Senior Obama advisers dismiss the comparisons. There will be columns, they say, but it won’t look like a Greek temple -- or even the White House portico.

"It looks like any state capitol," one adviser tells ABC News. "It's a bunch of columns."

For the candidate who brought you his very own faux-presidential seal, this is not a good perception. Obama aides insist that the set is staying, and that it won't look as bad as it sounds right now; the real backdrop, they say, will be his supporters.

It raises anew the larger issue: After Berlin, and the "Celebrity" ads, does Obama want to accept the nomination in front of a screaming crowd of 75,000 people?

Obama folks, who see the evening as an organizing tool, say yes. There’s a real enthusiasm gap here that the Obama folks want to exploit

But I wonder: If this was being put together post-"Celebrity" -- had it not been in the works for months -- would the campaign have had such a problem with accepting the nomination inside the Pepsi Center -- just like people normally do?

The Oscar-winning play/movie, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” keeps coming to mind, LOL!

Miles Gloriosus: “You, slave, will be torn apart by horses, to the plaudits of the troops and the amusement of the children.”

Too bad Hillary! isn’t in the running any longer. She’d make a great “Miles.” ;)

(And if anyone thinks I’m being racist, the “slave” in this play has always been played by a ‘Bitter White Guy, Clinging to his Guns and his God.’)

“Obama Temple” has the feel of a “Dukakis in a tank” type debacle.

Colorado:

During the speech when there will be traffic jams through out Denver. Freepers should march with signs that say

“OBAMA IS THE ONE YOU ARE WAITING FOR”

Should go over well with people that are waiting for hours in their cars

Obama and his campaign staff are so far out in left field that I can imagine their reasoning for the Barackapolis ran along the following lines:

The Olympics just ended. Obama is an Olympian like Michael Phelps. Olympians come from Greece. Let’s hold the speech in a Greek temple. People will associate the Greek temple with eight gold medals. The people will come out in masses to vote for him in droves because he’s got the gold.

Afterwards, Barack can light an Olympic torch to show the world that he is the most powerful man on earth.

The political cartoonists are going to have a field day with this image.

I bet the folks in charge of this event are working furiously to dismantle as much of this thing as they can before tomorrow. Either that or he is just full enough of himself to not see the danger here. Either way, it’s hard to imagine the Beatles concert atmosphere helping any one other than McCain.

He is going to attempt to portray himself as the answer to Dr King's dream.

Very profound observation.

I did read that a platform on the stage rises up, supposedly with Obambi standing on, to lift him above the masses.

I’m series.

“He is going to attempt to portray himself as the answer to Dr King’s dream.”

Unfortunately, he’s more like an affirmative action nightmare.

Obama is making a mortal mistake. He is playing TO his race.

My guess is that he will be trying to re-create the Lincoln Memorial and the echoes of “I have a dream”. He will make it about race.

The democrats, at least the ones who are not Clinton supporters, have yet to clue in that the American people only see an empty suit. Obama talks soaring rhetoric with no substance. Voters are seeing that since the Berlin Debacle.

IF Obama doesn’t hit specifics tomorrow night, I predict an actual de-bounce in the polls.

It all depends on how the voters view it. Americans do not like royalty.
