Storm could swamp GOP convention
Politico ^ | Aug. 27, 2008 | Mike Allen & Jonathan Martin

Planners of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul held emergency conversations Wednesday about what to do if a tropical storm continues on its track as a potential Category 3 hurricane threatening New Orleans.

Gustav’s projected path suggests possible landfall on the convention’s opening day — Labor Day.

The storm could threaten everything from President Bush’s Monday night address to the broader Republican message of effective government management.

Local officials fear a Katrina II — a rerun of the storm that ravished New Orleans and badly damaged Bush’s image.

Government forecasters said the target area runs from south Texas to the Florida Panhandle — including the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts devastated by Katrina.

The president, Laura Bush and Vice President Cheney are all scheduled to speak Monday on the convention’s opening day.

Friday is the third anniversary of Katrina’s landfall. The sloppy government response still haunts the Bush administration, raising questions about whether the president would address a political gathering if the Southeast coast was being battered by another monster storm.

The president is scheduled to fly into St. Paul on Monday, speak at the Xcel Energy Center at 9:40 p.m. Central time, then fly home to spend the night at Camp David.

It could be a shining moment as well. I would love to see Obamalamadindong try to go to NO and be in the spotlight filling sandbags and good ole Bobby Jindal get on the TV and demand he leave because he is getting in the way of real work for his little game.

I hope Governor Jindal has a new disaster plan that involves arresting Ray Nagin and all of his corrupt, incompetent cronies.... even if the hurricane swings south and hits Mexico.

Bad news. Contrast the image of The One speaking words of wisdom from the Temple with McCain a week later in New Orleans speaking in a near hurricane.

The Obamatrons will see it as validation of their Leader’s supernatural powers.

What exactly are they supposed to do, man the levees? This will be very interesting if the stupid NO denizens are again caught completely aware and do nothing. We have had more than enough of the “refugees” antics in Atlanta.

The sloppy government response still haunts the Bush administration,

No it doesnt. The shameless whore like behavior of the Establishment Media mis reporting Katrina at the direction of the Democrat National Convention haunts it. School Bus Nagin is still a joke among regular folk. Everyone BUT the Establishment Media knows the truth about how bad the Establishment media lost the battle to spin Katerina

Juan McCain, “Mr. Amnesty” should worry about the storm at the voting booth! The furious sound of me writing in my dog.

If this thing does develop into Katrina II, I just hope the school buses are staged to be USED for an evacuation instead of being turned into submarines, like the last time.

If Geroge W. can use his weather machine to make Katrina hit NO, surely he can use it to keep Gustav away.

I am certain Govr. Jindal will have it more together and act more decisively than former Govr. Blanc(k stare)o.

Compare and contrast: Mississippi got hammered just as if not harder than LA. Rescue efforts and rebuilding more effective vs the corrupt LA. CF

Obama will borrow Sean Penn’s leaky boat and go down there.

This could be a tremendous opportunity for the GOP to outclass the DNC's Denver orgy by doing away with all the wasteful pomp and circumstance by getting down to the essential business at hand.

What a contrast it would be if the Republicans just had a few speeches, nominated McCain and got out of town. I believe it would be greatly appreciated by the American public.

Jindal will kick Ray Nagin’s arse all over NO if he doesn’t listen to his instructions.

Jindal will make Blanco look like the fool we knew she was.

This is going to keep happening again and again. New Orleans is no longer sustainable in its present location. It should be abandoned and moved up the Mississippi. That would be less expensive than what is required to maintain a below sea level city on a coast regularly battered by major hurricanes.

Here is what I’d do.
If I was Bush. I’D roll massive troops into central Louisianna and Miss. I’d have federal people everywhere with equipment. If I was Bush I’d take to airwaves every day between now and Sunday and talk about the obvious storm
headed this way. I’d send FEMA and Everybody else out there well in advance and start driving the media instead of sitting back and letting them drive. The MSM is counting on this thing blowing up again so they can reference it and draw parrallels to Katrina. Even if these folks were in the wrong place. It’s pretty apparent what is headed for the Gulf. They did it to Bush Senior with Andrew and they did it to Bush Jr. with Katrina and they’ll do it again! You cannot continue to sit there when you see a bully coming to pick on you. You get up and punch him in the gut and then in the eye and then in the gut and you you keep on punching and fighting until the bully learns his lesson. Republicans cannot afford to sit back and let this thing hit and then let the media switch between showing people in misery and switch back to showing white men in blue coats and white shirts and ties at a convention.

“The sloppy government response still haunts the Bush administration..”

Doesn’t haunt me a bit. Fat welfare slobs are too lazy to help themselves and expect the government to steal food from the mouths of children living with hard-working families so they can drink beer and pay for cable TV.

Besides, three years before Katrina, a levee broke in Michigan flooding out homes and families. I don’t recall seeing a single NO resident here or a dime sent from NO.

It’s the proper thing to help a hard working person trying to keep his family above the floodwaters, but a different thing to help a person who wants to float above the storm in a yacht paid for by the taxpayer.

Rumor has it they’ve got superpowered magnets pointed straight for NO.
The loons will try anything to blame us for this, seeing that BHO keeps falling in the polls.
