The current narrative of the Bush Presidency is that it is a failure (believed by 107 of 109 historians surveyed) and that George W. Bush is the worst President in history (believed by 61% of those surveyed historians). Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, "The president already has the mark of the American people -- he's the worst president we ever had."
That's one narrative. I have another.

One small mistake in the linked article--the burning of Washington DC was in 1814, not 1812.
Absolutely correct. President Bush had led our military and intelligence and other agencies which have kept this country from being attacked since 911 2001 - as most Americans, me included, expected to happen after that ghastly day.
But then we saw President Bush’s reaction - calm, measured, emotional when needed, but most of all - DETERMINED.
He has kept that course, undeterred by the most horrendous anti-Bush syndrome which is a single monotone hate speech diatribe put out hour by hour on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Cspan (mostly), etc ad nauseum.
Just for THAT, President Bush should be remembered as a GREAT PRESIDENT.
He also restored personal honor and dignity to a White House which had been totally trashed and debauched under the Clintonista regime.
With his wife Laura and wonderful family, he restored “normalcy” of a love between husband, wife, children parents as the “role model” family as our first family - for that - for eight years of seeing that love between the President and his wife and his children - non self serving love - he has greatly blessed this nation - and the world.
The President has kept his pro-life approach in every issue that mattered on that front in the cultural war to destroy our nation. He has withstood withering attacks about opening up the federal pocketbook to support embryonic stem cell research - enduring the most vile accusations and detrimental statements for that stand. His Supreme Court appointees will continue to rule from a Constitutional basis rather than an activist basis - esp in issues that restore the dignity and protection of unborn children in this country. Of course there is still Justice Stevens and the prospect of an Obaminational appointment of an ultra liberal Sup Ct Justice should we elect B.O.
Just for that stance, America and the world and all who love LIFE and FREEDOM - should give this President the highest marks possible.
The President loves our men and women in the military and they love and respect him as their commander in chief - something that could not be said either about the person preceding Pres Bush or the joker who may be elected to succeed him.
The economy has stagnated in many ways - but the unemployment rate and the inflation rate have stayed relatively low as have the interest rates. But it’s the soaring price of gas - brought on by the refusal of the loony leftists down through the decades that have prevented drilling for and refining oil.
He has not vetoed enough spending bills by Congress, but I understand that to do so, would mean he would have to veto virtually every bill coming down the pipe....which would suit me just fine but would make the press go even more bonkers with bds.
In Europe, we have more conservative leaders in Germay, France, and over here in Canada.
The only reason the Europeans hate him is because their own controlled media and our leftist msm, speaking for the DNC, have convinved them our President is a lightweight intellectually who has problems speaking publicly. Yet he continues to be proactive with them all on a variety of issues that matter to this country.
Then there is Israel, the Palestinians, and Russia - some very huge foreign policy problems and ones which I have disagreed about their direction. But we are still talking with both - isn’t that what the Dems continue to demand of us?
There are other issues of course - immigration being the biggest one.
But overall - I will BET a TON that in a few years - esp if Obama and the Dems take full power - this country and the world will see such damage take place that millions will be yearning for the “good old days” when George W Bush was President...and I already know I will be one of them.

I will be joining those millions (and millions) as well.
And I will be smiling when the picky. narrow-minded, whiny, FReepers, who demand more from this man than they do from themselves or anyone ... perfection, start to hint at wistfulness for the days when George W. Bush was our President, and, due to HIS devotion to his duty, resolve, courage and intrepidity, and the awesome bravery of our unparallelled military, we’ve endured no horrors, no terrorist attacks on our soil since 9-11, thank God.
I pray it is ever thus, but I fear it will take another catastrophe to wake up the delusional and numbed brains of some folks.
Isn’t it the truth? If it were any other man, I think JUST the fact of his keeping this nation safe from future attacks would clearly justify his being categorized as an outstanding President!

President Bush is a good man, who has done his very best to bring us all a sense of security and keep us safe from all possible harm.

The left complains about the money we spent in Iraq. Well worth it if it translates into a safer world. Can't say the same for the great society trillions can we.

- Eisenhower
- good on civil rights, given no credit. Bad on SCOTUS appointments, including Warren and Brennan. Interstate Highway System. Strong on Foreign policy but allowed Castro to take over Cuba.
- Kennedy
- dropped the ball at the Bay of Pigs; when I learned what had happened it literally turned my stomach. Soviets built the Berlin Wall on his watch, and provoked the Cuban Missile Crisis. Established the predicate for heavy US involvement in Vietnam. On the plus side, he did significantly cut the top income tax rate.
- Johnson
- put 500,000 troops in Southeast Asia and, politically, had lost the war by the time he left office. "Great Society" (actually a pledge of a "great government") damaged society and slowed racial reconciliation - at the cost of a trillion dollars (in 1970 dollars). Bad SCOTUS nominees.
- Nixon
- nearly pulled victory out of the defeat that Johnson had baked in the Vietnam cake. Watergate, but at least he resigned rather than try to pull a Bill Clinton. Stagnant economy, beginnings of the 1970s inflation. Wage/price controls. Mediocre SCOTUS nominations.
- Ford
- short timer whose chief accomplishments were to pardon Nixon and, just barely, prevent the nomination in 1976 of Ronald Reagan. "Whip Inflation Now" (snort!) buttons.
- Carter
- turned ally state Iran into a very dangerous enemy. Weak posture toward the Soviet Union. Gas lines. Stagnation and very serious inflation.
- Reagan
- got the country going again, whipped inflation, tamed the energy crisis, and transcended Communism. Mediocre SCOTUS nominations.
- GHW Bush
- absorbed the hit of the S & L crisis, helped Yeltsin defeat the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Nominated Clarence Thomas (as well as Souter). Betrayed the tax pledge. Defeated Saddam's army but allowed the regime to remain, to fester into the mess which his son is still laboring to clear up.
- Clinton
- established the predicates of the present hostile Russia in Yugoslavia, and aggressively fought his enemies in the Republican Party rather than Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Raised taxes. Cut the military by a third. Jamie Gorelick's "wall" while OBL was hatching the 911 plot. Lied under oath in court, an endless litany of scandals, including Filegate - for which he should have been impeached in his first year in office. Bad SCOTUS nominees.
- GW Bush
- Tax cuts, engagement of the enemy in Afghanistan/Iraq, Alito/Roberts. On the negative side, laxity in dismantling the Clinton legacy in the Justice Department guaranteed that 911 would not be detected in time, weak handling of the press after Katrina and in regard to the Plame/Wilson affair. Signed McCain-Feingold, which is probably why we don't have a Reaganite nominated for POTUS this year.
My rankings of those presidents would place all the Republicans above all the Democrats:
But you could rank Johnson worse. And, if you stretched it, you could rank Kennedy above Ford. And you could debate whether GW Bush was actually worse than Eisenhower, especially considering SCOTUS nominations. I discount Watergate in light of the treatment of Clinton, whose Filegate scandal was objectively the equal of Watergate. "Who hired Craig Livingstone?"

Thanks for pinging me to this, Starwise. I’d vote for GWB again, too, if I could.
I would too, in a heartbeat and without hesitation. His only real flaw as president has been his weak communications, and by that I do NOT mean his ability to give speeches. The WH communications effort under President Bush has been weak throughout most of his presidency, except for the immediate post-9/11 period. He and his communications staff have been woefully poor at letting the American people know of this administration’s accomplishments, and far too few of his supporters have helped him out on this score.
Actually, it didn't collapse on the day he left the WH, which was January 20, 1989. The Berlin Wall didn't come down until November 9, 1989. When Gorbachev didn't interfere, that marked the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet Union (although the real beginning could be traced to the success of the Solidarity movement in Poland).
The only thing I can add is that, if we think Clinton's two terms were disasterous for the country, we ain't seen nothing yet if Obama gets elected this November.
Here too! I would vote for him again in a heartbeat.
