Denver riots: Day 2
Modern Conservative ^ | August 27, 2008

Most people savvy about political matters will know that the leftists will be protesting outside of both conventions this year, as they always do. There will be tear gas, mass arrests, and—as always—there won't be any conservatives involved. We will be keeping a tally of major riot/protest events each day. The MSM will make it difficult, of course, as they have to do their best to shield the Democrats from a 1968 effect.

Weakened protest groups say truce with cops is over

DENVER – Defiant activists said they will no longer communicate with police, who dealt a blow to their organization with mass arrests Monday night.

"There is no truce with police anymore," said Recreate '68 organizer Glenn Spagnuolo during a news conference in front of police headquarters Tuesday.

. . .

Activists say the crowd was not given a chance to disperse before police used pepper spray and made about 100 arrests.

Those arrests made a serious dent in the protest groups' strength, estimated at around 1,000 people. Police say they moved in when protesters, some of whom were carrying rocks, refused to disperse...

Excellent. Does this mean the cops get to club these punks now?

Oh no! Someone near and dear to me is working there. I pray that all the various law enforcement people will be kept safe.

As for the lefties.... meh.

During the Republican Convention, all permits for demonstrations should be denied. If demonstrators are going to act like this, we don’t need them on our streets.

Would they start the riots already! Maybe they should have imported some French youths to show them how its done.

I wouldn’t hardly call what’s happened so far “riots.”

I've seen wilder crowds in line for tickets to see KC & the Sunshine Band!

What I’ve noticed about the media in this regard is that they write nearly incoherent sentences about masked (often paid) protestors and then add in some words about “protestors” demanding or chanting about drilling-—essentially trying to make it look as though conservatives are actual law-breakers that want the American government destroyed.

Downtown Denver has probably seen more arrests around the bars in LoDo the night of a big football win than they've seen on any one of the convention days.

There have been 135 arrests total, according to news reports. Boulder Daily Camera *pops*.

I have friends who work downtown. They are going to work every day, unaffected except for traffic. There are no riots. I pray there are no riots. There are people I care about going about their lives in that area every single day.

I'm horrified that so many people seem to want riots, knowing that innocent bystanders and police officers will almost certainly get hurt.

I guess I am in the minority of people who think that "Peaceable assembly and redress of grievances" does not include masks. Masked demonstrators should be taken out by snipers.

On the contrary, St.Paul has been bending over backwards to accomodate them ...and they STILL keep suing.

Basically they won’t be happy until they are designated seats in the Xcel Center.

I work next door to where the GOP will be next week. I’m not too worried. Moonbats are all hat and no cowboy and most couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

Traffic is light. My office has maybe 50-60% of folks here. No tourists to speak of. The Sheraton and its parking garage were locked down for 3 hours Monday night while these idiots were arrested and hauled away.

The police have done a fine job.

I hope that the idiots in the Denver streets control themselves too

Guess I just remember the ‘68 riots in Chicago (& the ones in New Haven, CT - right next door to me, my mother never went shopping downtown again after that). Denver is nothing like that.

I hope you stay safe through the GOP convention as well.

It does bother me that some people have specifically expressed their desire for riots, as if only their political enemies would be harmed in the process.

I don’t think the First Amendment would be really effective if you can’t have a demonstration during a political convention.

I’d just keep them off the streets, watch for any illegal behavior.

For example, I’d make it illegal to carry bags of poo and pee in public, with exceptions for transfer of medical waste.

I remember the Greensboro Massacre between the KKK and the Nazi Party. A nurse, two doctors, and two other people were killed.

The 'Recreate '68' people are complete morons.

But as long as they don't resort to violence, they should remain free to whine on the streets and make spectacles of themselves. If they are violent, they should be arrested and it should go no further.
