The Racism Excuse
wall street journal ^ | 8/26/08 | staff

Things are supposed to be looking rosy for Democrats this November. But in case Barack Obama loses the Presidency, an excuse is all ready to go: America's too racist to elect a black man. Not even, in his Vice Presidential pick Joe Biden's inimitable description, one so "articulate and bright and clean."

This narrative has gained traction with the Democratic Presidential candidate's recent setbacks in the polls. We hear it from the convention crowd in Denver and liberals in the press. The older, poorer, white, often Hillary voter who sounds ambivalent about the Obama coronation is an enticing scapegoat.

"Call me crazy, but isn't it possible, just possible, that Obama's lead is being inhibited by the fact that he is, you know, black?" wrote John Heilemann in New York magazine earlier this month. "What makes Obama's task of scoring white votes at Kerry-Gore levels so formidable is, to put it bluntly, racial prejudice."

In this week's Newsweek (and on Slate), Jacob Weisberg reasoned that only some "crazy irrationality over race" could prevent Mr. Obama from winning the White House. If he does win, America will have reached post-prejudice Nirvana. "If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth," Mr. Weisberg continued. "To the rest of the world, a rejection of the promise he represents wouldn't just be an odd choice by the United States. It would be taken for what it would be: sign and symptom of a nation's historical decline." Wow. Vote for Barack, or America is as irredeemable as many foreigners believe.

When the MSM is playing the race card so openly, you have to wonder how well Obama is doing.

While I will NOT say that race won’t play a part in some peoples vote. I WILL say that policies, associations, long term values (or lack thereof) demonstrated and articulated by Obama will determine FAR more votes. We are not racist, neither are we stupid.

MSM is forgetting that Obama isn't a black man. He's half white, regardless of how much he hates his white grandparents who gave him everything so he didn't have to claw and fight his way into schools like Michelle did...(or so she likes to pretend)

It would be taken for what it would be: sign and symptom of a nation's historical decline

So electing an advocate of national decline would be a contraindicator of national decline?

The MSM has promoted Obama so brazenly they they figure the ONLY reason that Obama isn’t up by double digits is racism.

Is it "crazy irrational" for 90%+ of the black population to vote for one of their own?

I think electing an unqualified, know nothing Jr Senator just because he's black, who hasn't even passed a bill of his own making, who's close inner circle of friends and mentors are America hating Marxists and racists would be a SURE sign of this nation's historical decline.

What could a Mr. Weisberg know about race? Probably no way in h**l that he would show or display a religious mystycism over genetic similarity, no way in h**l.

Actually it will prove Democrats are racists because conservatives/Republicans would not vote for such a left wing nut bag regardless of color.

If Alan Keyes was the candidate for Republicans he would get all of the conservative vote without fail. Further illustrating the right is about ideology not identity.

Republicans in general, and conservatives in particular, are completely off the hook as it regards "racism" in the Obama vote.

He's a Marxist. Conservatives, by definition, don't support marxism. He could be as white as Ted Kennedy's ass, and conservatives wouldn't vote for him.

If there are white people turning away from Obama because of his color, it is moderate, liberal, or screamingly liberal whites. The same group the media generally arranges neatly on their pedastels each election cycle.

They can't make the "racism" charge without slurring those darling groups.

“Is it “crazy irrational” for 90%+ of the black population to vote for one of their own?”

Kerry got 88% of the Black vote in 2004- I don’t think Obama’s race (or, most importantly, publicly perceived racial identity) is the only thing in play in his getting those numbers- any Dem candidate would be looking at something similar.

If they have to blame Americans, things don't look so good for the Messiah.

We will never, ever, hear the end of how racist America is. Every kid will be required to study this elction for years to come.

Ah well, I look forward to flipping the channels and watching the horror and disgust on the talking heads at the networks. Maybe matthews wil cry when Pa. is called for McCain early.

Do Democrats really think so little of their fellow Americans?

Yes, they do.

Fine, here's a better example:

Black Conservatives Conflicted on Obama

Is it "crazy irrational" to be so conflicted when the candidate's positions are 180 degrees from your own views?
