Plot to kill Barack Obama: Three 'white supremacists' arrested
The Telegraph ^ | August 26, 2008 | Toby Harnden

Three men with suspected links to white supremacist groups are in custody in Denver after being arrested with rifles and a telescopic sight amid fears of a plot to assassinate Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate.

Mr Obama is due to become the first black candidate to accept the nomination of a major political party on Thursday, the final day of the Democratic Convention, at Invesco Field, an open air stadium that holds some 75,000 people.

CBS4, a Denver radio station, reported that one of the suspects told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle ... sighted at 750 yards". When one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama", a CBS4 source said, “he responded in the affirmative".

Fox News reported that the three men might have links to Sons of Silence, an outlaw motorcycle group, and white supremacists.

Authorities said that the three people has been arrested on firearms and drug charges.

Two rifles, one with a telescopic sight, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, licenses in the names of other people and methamphetamine were found in a truck that was stopped on Sunday morning. One of the rifles was listed as stolen from Kansas.

Tharin Gartrell, 28, was in the rented pick-up truck when he was pulled over in Aurora, a Denver suburb, for driving in an erratic manner.

Police then went to the Cherry Creek Hotel in Denver, about four miles from Invesco Field, to pursue Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, who was already wanted on numerous warrants.

Adolph jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window, breaking an ankle, and was arrested. Police sources said he was wearing a swastika and is suspected of having ties to white supremacist organisations.

Despite their best efforts, Ward and June couldn't stop Wally from associating with a bad crowd.

Is COPS still on?

Maybe you’ll see them there. Seems they meet the intellectual credentials. These guys probably couldn’t rob a newspaper machine.

It was just a misunderstanding.

When the cops asked the guy if he intended to shoot Obama he thought they said “Bambi”.

The dude on the right looks like Tommy Lee Jones.

The guy on the left is the posted child for “When Family Trees Don’t Have Forks.”

going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point

Is this just coincidence or did they rip off a headline about a TV show from the Drudge Report?

Sooner or later, somebody is going to target a packed stadium. It’s just a matter of time, low-hanging fruit that hasn’t yet been picked. Afterwards, the nation will say, “Why didn’t we think of that?”

Just to clarify. Marines fire at 600 yards without a scope. Oswald was a Sharpshooter in the Marine Corp. Just before he left the service, he fired a Marksmanship score.

'cept for that whole admitting that was the plot part.

Something is wrong with this story. There seems to be a lot of supposition here, in this story and in this arrest.

As for the verified the "plot" comment, that is not exactly correct.

Notice how the reporter used the phrase... "when asked directly" if they had come to kill Obama, a suspect replied in the "affirmative."

As a reporter myself for nearly 20 years, there is something not right with that phrasing.

Does it mean the suspect didn't say "no"?

Does it mean the suspect wiggled his foot?

Or does it mean the suspect stopped saying "no" and fell asleep after the 37th time he was asked.

Seriously, it's much more likely that one of these idiot druggies made some off-the cuff comment in a bar, which was then repeated several times until someone in authority heard the rumor.

They then decided to arrest these idiots, and used a lot of supposition to make the arrest.

Didn’t the guy on the left appear as a Pawn Shop owner in Men in Black?

Does anyone have an image of the guy whose head grows back?

I often post articles of similar content, but from different authors (and agencies if possible), because there's usually something different (and of interest) in each.

It never occurred to me until I saw your reply that it might be an annoying habit. :)

DENVER (AP) - Authorities are investigating whether a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck made statements threatening Barack Obama, but emphasize he never posed a “credible threat” to the candidate or the Democratic National Convention. Federal and local authorities had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, but U.S. Attorney Troy Eid downplayed the case. “We’re absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado,” Eid said in a statement.

Reminds me of “My Cousin Vinny”, when the kid was asked in the interrogation: “At what time did you shoot the clerk?”

Incredulous, the kid asked: “I shot the Clerk???” I shot the Clerk???”

Then, when reading the transcript aloud in court the sherrif said. “I asked him when he shot the clerk, and he replied ‘I shot the clerk.’”.
