Obama’s First Defense: I Was Eight Years Old (Obama's response to Ayers Ad)
Commentary ^ | 8/25/2008 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 08/25/2008 4:33:55 PM PDT by mojito

Barack Obama’s staff seems to be distracted or confused. Or maybe they have some revealing poll results available only to them. How else to explain them airing this ad?

Barack Obama: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.

ANNCR: With all our problems, why is John McCain talking about the sixties, trying to link Barack Obama to radical Bill Ayers?

McCain knows Obama denounced Ayers’ crimes, committed when Obama was just eight years old.

Let’s talk about standing up for America today.

John McCain wants to spend $10 Billion a month in Iraq, tax breaks for corporations that ship jobs overseas, selling out American workers.

John McCain, just more of the same.

A McCain spokesman fired back: “The fact that Barack Obama chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist raises more questions about his judgment than any ad ever could. And the fact that he’s launching his own convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn’t bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight’s speeches will.”

What would possess the Obama camp to go down this road? Obama’s lame defense of the relationship–that he was eight when Ayers committed his crimes–is, of course, entirely irrelevant. His association with Ayers, as Hillary Clinton pointed out in the Philadelphia debate, ran deeper than he has tried to present it and it began and continued when both men were adults, long after Obama had become acquainted with Ayers’s past.

Soon enough everyone will learn that Ayers donated money to Obama, held a fundraiser to launch his first political race in his home, served on the board of the Woods Foundation with Obama, and headed the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (the records of which Stanley Kurtz will gain access to tomorrow), an organization which Obama supported and for which he may have approved grant money. We are off to the races on this. It’s unclear why Obama opened the door.

Perhaps realizing it all will inevitably come out, he wanted to begin trying to shape the public perception of this relationship. But he has just begun setting out to convince Americans that he is a patriotic, non-radical, non-exotic guy just like them, so the timing could not be worse. After all, how many of us are friends with unrepentant former terrorist bombers?

I wasn’t even born when the Nazis raped Europe. But I think if today I started cavorting with prominent neo-fascists it wouldn’t be too over-the-top for decent people to criticize me on that score.

They must have run an internal poll and were terrified of the results.

So, what better idea than to run an ad that brings it up again? In case you missed it the first time?

And in a vague, mealy-mouthed way that turns this issue into a story that won't go away.

Is Obummah unable to comprehend the message in the ad?

Jennifer Rubin is ripping on Obama, not defending him. Why should there be a barf alert?

How old was Obama in 2001 when Ayers stated that he had no regrets about his actions and wished he had done more. In fact, what about the things they did together in the 90’s?

Was Obama 8 years old when this happened?

The truth is that the two men worked closely together for years, beginning several months before that 1995 fundraiser. The fund Obama chaired and which was supposed to improve public education in Chicago never met its stated purpose of improving public school pupils’ performance and, in fact, probably hindered it, despite having blown through $110 million in the process. And as chairman of this group Obama funneled this money to politically useful types including Fidelistas and Maoists who like Ayers (now vice-president elect of the American Education Research Association) are working to make our public schools indoctrination centers for the left.

By that logic one could have friendly relations with a former Nazi concentration camp commandant just as long as they were young during WWII.

“Obama denounced Ayers’ crimes, committed when Obama was just eight years old”

But with in the past few years, Ayers said “I’ve thought about this a lot. Being almost 60, it’s impossible to not have lots and lots of regrets about lots and lots of things, but the question of did we do something that was horrendous, awful? ... I don’t think so. I think what we did was to respond to a situation that was unconscionable”

Obama, as a presidential nominee, associates with Ayers who is unrepentant.

Obambi, it’s not a question of what you did when you were 8 years old, it’s a question of how you have embraced this terrorist in the past 15 years as an ADULT.

It’s also an issue of how you have LIED and obfuscated to mislead the public about the extent of your relationship with Ayers, who is far more than “just a guy who lives in my neighborhood” to you.

Also, as we’ve been told many times since Watergate, “the cover-up can be worse than the crime!” [although in this case, sucking up to an anti-American radical and terrorist is bad enough, even before the dishonest cover-up]

Where is Ayers during all this? Is he in hiding?? We should try really hard to provoke some outbursts from Ayers, b/c he does not seem like the kind of guy to stay quiet for toooo long — maybe some mockery, lampooning, hostility, etc. would smoke out Ayers and also Bernadine Dohrn. Those scumbags have been awfully quiet for a long time — wonder what it would take to get them to come out blazing mad to defend their radical vision and terrorist “honor among scumbags”?????

Was the ‘one’ eight years old on 9/11?

What did he know and when did he know it?

What does the ‘one’ have to say to the families of the people who were murdered by his scummy friends.

After all, how many of us are friends with unrepentant former terrorist bombers?

Or friends with black nationalist pastors who scream "No, not God Bless America, God Damn America!" in their sermons.

Or friends with guys indicted on charges of wire fraud, bribery, money laundering, and extortion.

Not many of us.

Yes, I continue to be impressed. Most importantly, they have kept Obama on the defensive now for weeks and he can't get out of it. When Obama's team tries to go on offensive, they end up on defense again. The good news is that there is plenty of ammo left to keep him on his heels for the remaining 2 months.

Wasn’t he hanging around with a Frank something when he was 8? And I think Frank was a commie, IIRC.

I just have one question. Why is this guy a free man and a college professor at that?

I mean did we really win the cold war? One of the commie's objectives was to gain a foothold in our education system. It looks to me like they were successful.
