I give them money if
1) They’re polite.
2) I’m in a good mood.
I would have directed her to the residence of the nearest guilty white liberal.
That's a good response! I'll have to remember it.
I'm not a liberal, but I am white, and most of my guilt is toward all the homeless domestic critters out there, which I wish I could rescue but can't. My landlady recently told me I had to quit feeding some stray cats who had been abandoned.
Now I feel bad when I look out the window and see three young hungry cats wondering where's the food. I had originally thought to either tame or trap them, and pawn them off on a rescue which would find them homes.
Some b@st@rd neighbor dumped them, and some other b@st@ard neighbor probably injured them by chucking rocks at them... one of them had an injured leg, and one of them had a laceration on his cheek.
So, yes--some things do make me feel guilty, but not generally panhandlers.
Morning there, Clemenza - I don't know if they bother to go to Deerfield anymore, I think they drive them out West to 441 and leave them there. Can't get rid of these guys! I'll usually donate to the guy selling the Sun Sentinel in front of the other guys. At least he's trying...
I don't know many Southerners that are stupid enough to go to New York. :-)
The culture is different here. Neighbors help neighbors with everything. Beinging from a small communitity (pop. 500 or so) where doors are not locked and everybody knows everybody and their business is a blessing and a curse. Even people in the larger towns are more open and trusting than most places up North. We have no business going to places like New York on vacation. I have no desire or intention of doing so either.
The ones especially in Washngton, D.C. who really get me angry are the ones doing the "I'm a homeless Vet" routine.

I had not one but TWO come to my house Tuesday. One at 1 AM!
My wife and I have given a lot over the years to the groups you list. We’ve come to believe that the day they get our check they prepare a mailing and send us something else. It has altered our giving patterns and seek out those that have better manners.
exactly. Maybe even before.
LOL
Cause I'm just so sure they file a 941 monthly for income, pay taxes, medicare and social security on the cash they generate.... oh wait, they're democrat constituency, therefore they get a pass.
Boy, what a bunch of wishy-washy Freepers on this thread. Nine out of ten of you are the problem. Altruist memes gone wild. Just ignore them or spray ‘em if they get too close.
So can I. Had one get a little aggressive with me in New Orleans a few years ago - I shoved him away with a great degree of vigor, and then walked away.
A visitor at 1 AM will be greeted with a .45 caliber pistol, drawn, cocked, and unlocked. That is not tolerable behavior.
These people are nothing but con artists. They get plenty of free, taxpayer-funded aid courtesy of our leftwing government already. This is just a con to add to the fluff.
My answer to the homeless dregs on society is to give them a one-way ticket to Detroit or some other liberal city and let them deal with 'em.
When I first got married I was working 12+ hours a day at a meat packing plant. I got home one day as my wife handed a homeless guy a meal out the back door. I asked her what that was about. She said she saw him down the road and had to feed him. The next day I got home to see a small crowd of bums on my back steps. I chased them off and when I went in my wife said she had been scared to open the door with all of them out there.
She doesn’t feed the bums anymore.
I was raised in a passenger train car sitting on the ground in Southern Oregon. It was right next to the tracks and sometimes when the train was stopped hoboes would come over from the open boxcars and ask for something. Dad said if you gave them something they would mark the outside of the house with a known sign, telling others that food was available at this house. Years later I read a book that substantiated what my dad had told my mother and I.
Some cities have collection boxes and send the money to the shelters. We did that in my home town and the ACLU sued the City!
The panhandlers cleared out in about a week once they figured out people weren’t going to give them money.
