Gallup: Biden Does No Harm, but May Not Help Much

Barack Obama's selection of U.S. Sen. and former presidential candidate Joe Biden as his running mate is not generating a momentous immediate reaction from the nation's voters. Just 14% of registered voters interviewed in a new USA Today/Gallup poll say Biden makes them more likely to vote for Obama in November and 7% say less likely while 72% say he will not have much effect on their vote. This results in Biden potentially having a net positive impact on voter support for the Democratic ticket of +7 percentage points -- small by comparison with other recent vice presidential selections. A net 17% of nationwide registered voters said they were more likely to vote for John Kerry in 2004 on the basis of his selection of John Edwards as his running mate (24% more likely and 7% less likely). A net 12% of voters reported being more likely to vote for Al Gore in 2000 on account of his choosing Joe Lieberman (16% more likely and 4% less likely). A net 18% of voters indicated they were more likely to vote for Bob Dole in 1996 on the basis of his choice of Jack Kemp to complete the ticket (26% more likely and 8% less likely). A net 25% of voters were more likely to vote for Bill Clinton in 1992 on account of Al Gore (33% more likely and 8% less likely). The only recent vice presidential choices to spark less voter reaction than Biden were Dick Cheney in 2000 (net 4%, with 14% more likely and 10% less likely) and Dan Quayle in 1988 (net score of 0, with 10% more likely and 10% less likely).

I did a baaaaad thing. I rilly did.

I put this on CNN's ticker regarding Biden as choice for Obama. I am soooo baaaad.

Quote: How many males can you entice with the slogan "o.b. time for a change?" It's just Obama and Biden, tampooning the Voters.

o.b. is a registered trademark. But then Sen. Soetoro-Obama has always been above following the rules.

o.b. the manly absorbent? o.b. is attractive to women. I guess the Democrats hope all their women voters are experiencing their monthly so they'll vote the "o.b." ticket. End Quote.

I wonder if it will be approved. I am soooooo baaaaaad. roflmao

The only thing I like about Biden is that he is a Catholic.

Catholic in name only... I remember Biden's remark a few months ago about how he would strangle anyone with his rosary beads if they questioned his faith.

There are just so many things wrong with that remark I hardly know where to begin.

I am also curious... I haven't heard the word "gravitas" thrown around by the media the way it was when Cheney was brought on the Bush ticket for the VP slot.

He must be a holdover from the Spanish Inquisition.

I used to see Biden at Union Station regularly but usually only on Friday afternoon. I commuted every day (from Baltimore). My impression was he stayed in Washington through the week and went home on the weekends. I could be wrong about this. Back then, he rode the Metroliner.

Who the hell takes a poll on the day after an announcement i would think they would at least wait a week or two and give him time to screw up the campaign !

Bingo.

Just his last 2 years of quotes are enough to make him a huge target.

Maybe they just want heat taken off Barry?

How long is the train ride ?

I’d estimate that his commute may equal or be shorter than some inter Washington travel by car.

In any case the working man persona seems to be the major strength they are trying to create.

He's pro-abortion, how Catholic can he really be?

Biden is like the obnoxious uncle who shows up drunk at all the family reunions, talks non-stop, tells stupid jokes, and asks for a loan on the way out.

Young voters will see him this way.

Biden is a pro-abortion Catholic—the worst kind of Catholic.

In Joe Biden, Obama would get one of the fiercest abortion proponents in the Senate and someone who has made a reputation of out badgering Supreme Court nominees about abortion during confirmation hearings.

In fact, before he dropped out of the Democratic primary race Obama eventually won, Biden confirmed he would have a pro-abortion litmus test for his own possible judicial picks.

“I would not appoint anyone who did not understand that Section 5 of the 14th Amendment and the Liberty Clause of the 14th Amendment provided a right to privacy ... which means they would support Roe v. Wade,” he said in a November debate.

Biden’s pro-abortion track record in the Senate mirrors Obama’s.

He received a pro-life voting record of 0 percent from the National Right to Life Committee for 2007-2008.

Before that, Biden compiled records of 0 percent, 16 percent, 0 percent, and 22 percent with the pro-life group in previous Congressional sessions. His support for a ban on partial-birth abortions represented the only time he voted with the pro-life side — with Biden voting repeatedly to force taxpayers to fund abortions at home and abroad.

Biden — this is the man who has tried to get the presidential brass ring twice now but couldn’t even make it out of the primaries.

Why in the world would anyone think he could bring success to a presidential campaign in the #2 spot?

The only reason I care is because he spells disaster to Obama’s campaign.

His ride was about an hour and a half back then. It’s probably quicker now with Acela train. I don’t believe he did it everyday of the week back then. I did it everyday of the week. I’d have seen him on more than Fridays. As for the working man thing, you’re right, it’s not even worth dignifying with a retort. “Members” of the Senate are annointed ones. When work needs to be done, the staffs do it.
